Probably not. A fingerprint reader is a biometric security device that records your print and will not bootup without you scanning your print.

If you're especially concerned about data security (like the govt. should be), then it's a good idea. Otherwise, simple passwords or encription software will do nicely

Spending 200 for a fingerprint reader is not worth.

If you are looking something for free that can secure your laptop then try enabling the password authorization from the BIOS setup.

It can be enable by pressing the esc button or F1 button as soon you start your laptop.

**Warning (Please memorise the password and write it somewhere. If you lose the password then only the laptop manufacturer can unlock your laptop after your verification and they will going to charge some money too).

So be very cautious before setting the password in the BIOS.

The thing to remember is that the fingerprint reader does not preclude the system from requiring a password, so you still can crack the password easily;

The up side is that you will not forget your password, unless you carelessly leave your fingers at home when you travel.

It would essentially tighten the security on your system. I'm not sure if the technology is as reliable as to rely on it to be the only option to grant you access to your system. From an ease of use perspective it can relieve you from the hassle of remembering passwords. If it's integrated in the system you should assume it would be backed up by the manufacturer and be more reliable. In the end it can only enhance your security, just don't rely on it to be the only way in.

It's just for security. You can use your fingerprint in place of passwords, but frankly, unless you're working on something truly top secret, I think it's overkill, don't you? I'd say definitely not necessary

You probably don't unless your paranoid about security. But if you do want one you could find one in a Cyberguys or Tiger direct magazine. I've seen them for less than $60 so you could get one relatively cheap, even cheaper if you tried Ebay.

Fast/secure login and can be made to make sure that NO-ONE else can use your laptop...The fast login ensures only the authorized person and their profile is loaded (in case you have multiple users)...Other wise, it's just a pretty neat "toy" for your boy! :-)

I got a Sony Vaio ($2,100) and it has a built in finger print scanner and it is very worth it. It can sign you in to facebook or yahoo answers or youtube or any webpage that requires a password and user name.

It would help if your laptop got stolen. If you aren't worried about that then I guess don't bother.You could find one less that $200 if you look around.
