A Dell laptop can be equipped with a BIOS password, which is a password that's part of the laptop itself, not the operating system installed on the laptop's hard drive. This password adds an extra degree of protection against hackers and thieves and prevents a thief from digitally accessing the data on the hard drive. Because a BIOS password is part of the Dell laptop and not the operating system, it is difficult but possible to reset with the right tools and basic technical knowledge.

Items you will need

Phillips screwdriver

Open the access panel to the password reset jumper if your Dell laptop has one. Consult your manual for the access panel's location. Some access panels have a tab you slide, while others are held in place with a screw.

Step 2

Pry the plastic cover off the reset jumper with your fingernail. The reset jumper is a small pin port labeled "PSWD" with three pins. Put the plastic back onto the jumper over pin 1 and 2 instead of 2 and 3. Wait 90 seconds.

Step 3

Pry the plastic off the reset jumper again and place it back onto the number 2 and 3 pins. Turn the laptop on. Repeat step 2 if the password is still present. Leave the plastic clip on pins 1 and 2 for a longer duration than last time.

Without a PSWD Reset Jumper

Step 1

Locate the reserve battery, also known as the CMOS battery, if your Dell laptop is not equipped with a password reset jumper. The CMOS battery's location varies among Dell laptop models. Consult your manual for the battery's location on your specific Dell laptop model. Many Dell reserve batteries are located underneath the main laptop battery. Remove the main battery and look for a sticker under it with instructions on removing the secondary CMOS battery.

Step 2

Remove your Dell's reserve battery per the instruction manual or sticker located under the main battery. Removing the reserve battery resets the laptop's BIOS password. Wait 90 seconds, then replace the reserve battery. Reconnect the main battery.

Step 3

Press the "Power" button to turn the laptop on.

How to use the jumper to reset the BIOS password on your Dell laptop !

now to unlock your dell laptop maually

Before you begin

Perform the safety steps in the order below.

Warning: these steps are for your personal safety and the protection of the equipment.

Turn off your computer, and then unplug the power cable.

Wait 5 seconds.

Disconnect all external devices.

Disconnect any telephone or network cables from your computer.

Press and hold the Power button while your computer is unplugged to dissipate static electricity from the motherboard.

Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself with a wrist-grounding strap or by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of your computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity.

To use the jumper to reset the BIOS password

Note: On the Dell Manuals page, download the Setup Guide or Service Manual for your laptop. Then refer to the System Board Components section for a labeled illustration of the jumpers on the motherboard.

Ensure that your work surface is flat and clean to prevent scratching your laptop's cover.

Remove the battery from your laptop.

With your laptop still turned off and unplugged, remove the cover.

To locate the password jumper on the motherboard, look for the letters PWD, PSWD or PSWDCLR.

Choose an option:

If there are 2 metals pins under the jumper

Remove the jumper from the pins, replace the cover, reconnect the power cable and turn on your laptop.

After the Windows logon screen appears, turn off your laptop.

Again, disconnect the power cable. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to release static electricity from the system.

Remove the cover.

Replace the jumper in its original position covering the 2 pins. This will re-enable password feature.

Replace the cover.

Reconnect the power cable and other connections, replace the battery and turn on your laptop.

If there are 3 pins under the jumper

Remembering which two pins are covered, remove the jumper from those pins.

Reinstall the jumper in a different position. For example, if you removed the jumper from pins 2 and 3, reinstall the jumper over pins 1 and 2.

Replace the cover and reconnect the power cable.

Turn on your laptop and wait 5 seconds. Then press and hold the Power button until it turns off again.

Disconnect the power cable again. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to release static electricity from the system.

Replace the jumper over the original 2 pins.

Replace the cover.

Reconnect the power cable and other connections, replace the battery and turn on your laptop.

You can now assign a new system and/or setup password. For more password information, refer to the Passwords section of your laptop's service manual.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. The only way to reset your windows password 100% safe is to use a software called Reset Password Pro.

The software allows you to create a boot-disk, that can be made on a CD/DVD or USB stick. The boot-disk can then be inserted into any locked machine, and it's a simple case of pressing reset. Here is their official site: http://www.resetwindowspass.com

If you are running Dell servers, it is recommended to enable BIOS password. This is will prevent accidental changes done to Dell BIOS settings by others who get physical access to the server.

You can setup two different types of passwords in Dell BIOS:

System Password: This will be prompted before the system can boot up, and load the operating system.

Setup password: The system will prompt for this password only when you are trying to access the BIOS settings.

Depending on your situation, it might be a good idea to enable both the system and setup password at the BIOS level. I recommend that you at least enable BIOS password.

Press F2 for System Setup

When the Dell server is booting up, press F2 to start system setup, from where you can change Dell BIOS settings.

BIOS System Security

From the Dell BIOS main menu, scroll down to “System Security” and press enter.

Password Not Enabled

From here, you can see that both the System and Setup password is not enabled by default.

Enable System Password (and Setup Password)

Scroll to “System Password” and press enter, which will prompt you to enter the password that you like to set for the system. Please understand that if you set this password, you have to enter this password everytime you start the system. Do the same thing for Setup Password.

Don’t forget this bios password. If you forget, then you have go through the painful process of resetting the Dell BIOS password.

Password is Enabled

Once you’ve enabled both the password, from the “System Security” menu, you’ll see that that both system and setup password is enabled as shown below.

password is set

System Password Prompt (During Startup)

From now-onwards, anytime you start the system, it will not load the operating system, unless you specify the system password as shown below.

Setup Password Prompt (To Access BIOS)

If you press F2, to get to the BIOS, it will prompt for the setup password as shown below. If you don’t enter a valid password here, you cannot access the Dell BIOS settings anymore.

Assuming that you have the bios password follow the steps below

if you don't have the bios password get it from here: http://www.biospro.com/

Disabling the Setup Password If You Have Access to the Current Password

Step 1

Power down your computer. Start the PC up again, pressing the "F2" key as soon as it powers up, to enter the BIOS setup program.

Step 2

Enter the current setup password to access the settings screen. Use the arrow keys to highlight "Setup password," and use the left and right cursor keys to change to setting to "not enabled."

Step 3

Press the "Esc" key to close the system setup program. Ensure you select the option to save your changes. Your computer will restart and the setup password will be disabled.

Disabling the Setup Password If the Current Password Has Been Lost

Step 1

Power down your PC and disconnect the main power cord. Open the computer case and touch a metal surface on the outer casing of the computer to ground yourself, preventing damage to any internal components.

Step 2

Look on the green motherboard for a small plastic "jumper" block connecting two pins labelled "PSWD." Carefully remove the jumper block connecting the two pins. Replace the PC cover and re-connect the computer's power cord.

Step 3

Power up the computer, holding "F2" as soon as it starts up to enter the BIOS setup program. Use the arrow keys to highlight "Setup password," and ensure it is set to "not enabled." Press the "Esc" key to close the BIOS setup program.

Step 4

Power down the computer, disconnect it from the power source and remove the cover. As before, touch a metal surface on the outer casing of the computer in order to ground yourself, thus preventing damage to any internal components. Replace the small plastic jumper connecting the two "PSWD" labelled pins. Close the computer cover.

Step 5

Power up your PC. The setup password should now be disabled.
