You may have somehow repartitioned your hard drive while you installed XP. The other 30gb is probably there but not seen by windows.
Just to be sure you are saying that 28gb is the total size of the drive or is it free space available?
I am not doubting you, it is just that I have seen people get confused betweeen total size of the drive and available free space before.
If your drive did lose the 30gb you can either do it all over again and delete that partition during Windows setup and create a 60gb partition and reinstall windows on to that,
or you can try a program called Partition Magic ($70) that may be able to recover that 30gb without reinstalling XP.
Your laptop may also have a hidden recovery partition that is used to restore the laptop back to factory specs, but that is usually no more than 7-10 gb. Do not delete this partition if you have it.

If u accidentally made a mistake while partioning u can recover the lost hard disk space by doing this
right click on my computer
click on manage
go to disk management local
u will see ur hard disk space in full
right click on the unused partition and create a new partiton and use it
good luck

Try to check the jumper setting of your hard disk, make sure that it set to master, most of the setting was in cable select and the reading of the hard disk was minimized to 32gb.

ok more than likely you have partition's to check if this has happened open up your disc defragmenter and see if it thinks you have two drives, to remove a partition you need to get a program called DBan then reinstall xp

you most likely have system restore points ( which you need to disable and then clear out the system restore points )
Also temporary files ( www.ccleaner.com ) to get rid of temporary files.
And reminants of old programs you have installed in c:\program files
If that does not help , post back.
