I'll try to be as descriptive as possible. I have a HP Compaq nc6220 laptop. For the past week my computer has been acting strange. It keeps freezing then I have to hold the power button to shut it off and then restart it. It's going super slow and it keeps redirecting me to different websites and not taking me to the site I asked for. Pop-up's and advertisements keep popping up even though I have pop-up blocker on. Then to top it off, it keeps making this strange sound. It's like (let's see how can I describe this...) well, you know when a pop-up pops up and you go to exit that page and then a little warning box pops up trying to get you not to exit? Well, the sound that little warning box makes is the same sound my computer keeps making randomly. Nothing pops up when it makes that sound it just makes the sound like every 10 mins. I know this may sound a bit confusing but please try to understand and please help me. I have AVG Anti-Virus protection but my computer is still acting strange. I even tried to do a System Restore but it didn't help. Do I have a virus? What can I do? Is there anything I can do that won't cost money? Any help would be very much appreciated. I really want my computer virus free back in good working condition. Can you please help me?

First of aren't you lucky mine keeps overheating. LOL

You have malware.

Reboot your computer into save mode with networking

Kaspersky Virus Removal tool

This should find most of your problems though to be sure

After studying all the ones different solutions, it happened to me that the difficulty would possibly very good don't have anything to do with the OS, viruses, or any of that different nonsense. Simply placed, it's going to very good be a difficulty very similar to what I had a while in the past. I used to be experiencing the equal hassles, the one factor I might do used to be to close it down and check out once more later Lo and behold, I determined to get a better rough force in the future, I set up it and the difficulty disappeared. WHY? It seems that the difficulty used to be that the HDD used to be at fault. A techie informed me after checking out it, that a capacitor (a thingie that holds a cost for a exact duration of time) within the HDD used to be now not functioning and for this reason it used to be overheating and closing itself down. Solution: Get a further HDD, set up the OS, set up your whole backups and/or reinstall any systems or video games you wish. A lot of labor, however however, a comp. is just a piece of hardware, it might and does holiday down by way of no fault of your possess. ;-)

Let me put the other answers in simpler terms: You've got Malware, a type of virus(sort of). Restart your computer and press F8 constantly(keep pressing it, like tap tap tap) before the Windows logo pops up, it should ask you what to boot up in. Boot up in Safe Mode w/ networking, download the Kapersky, and run it and let it do it's thing. This should help.

unfortunately pressing the button only makes it worse it should be absolute last resort use ctrl+alt+delete to open task manager and try to stop the things using up allot of memory aim yahoo a browser internet explorer firefox chrome whatever you see that you know you installed you can safely stop

as far as the beep you here it's probably from your system warning you of low resources memory etc

you do have more that just a virus and unless you used a cd and did a clean system restore or destructive system restore as it's called the ad-ware malware spyware root kits servers every possible horrible thing you don't want is probably on your computer my suggestion try to move personal files text files photos videos anything that's irreplaceable to a cd or usb flash drive once it's off your computer you can then do the same thing you did before but instead of non destructive system restore you have to hope it's not all infected and go for the full destructive system restore if it doesn't have that option or if that's what you did you are going to have to get a disc that's a disk that came with your computer hopefully or find a used factory disc for your make and model of pc and use it to fully re-install there's no way the disk is going to be infected so try that if you don't mind a challenge you could download on a friends computer http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

and burn it to cd or to usb flash drive don't just copy it use an iso burner for cd and unetbootin for usb http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

i suggest you read a good bit about linux before switching ubuntu is the most windows like it's user friendly with huge community and forum it's 100% better than windows you'll never go back if you like it if you don't mind change doing things a little different and it's more secure than windows so that's my advice find someone with some computer savvy at your school or search local linux groups that can help

if you want the week long challenge of cleaning out the junk it may not be possible but you can start by going and saving personal files on disc or usb flash thumb drive

then go to start control panel ad remove programs most of these you installed so you can easily without harming anything delete all of these skip ones that say hp or microsoft or ms skip drivers and service packs sp1 sp2 sp3 hotfixes anyway you can delete allot here and it's nothing that's so crucial it will destroy your system but delete what you feel comfortable deleting then d/l

http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/?tag=pop and http://download.cnet.com/CCEnhancer/3000-18512_4-75212385.html

run these using all the settings except wipe free space when it asks back up the registry save to desktop then downloading most of these start with http://download.cnet.com/Comodo-Firewall/3000-10435_4-75181464.html?tag=dropDownForm;productListing

then http://download.cnet.com/windows/security-software/?tag=rb_content;main

go down the left side skip corporate software and encryption for now and you have comodo firewall from above so no need for another anyway download a couple anti virus a couple from every category or several pieces from some sections

install and update these pieces of software install one update it then here comes the main part you have to run the software in safe mode turn off comp and press f8 when you turn it back on it should give you a few options choose safe mode use up and down arrow keys to choose then hit enter

do this routine install each piece of software update it then go back to safe mode run the software then move to the next you can speed up your pc after this is done by stopping unnecessary programs http://www.blackviper.com/category/guides/windows-xp/

Redirection to different websites is 99%+ indication of some malware or virus. Do a full virus and separate malware scan....

after reading it all

reinstall your OS and before doing ANYTHING on it get an anti virus like security essentials
