I recommend you Sugarsync as it is top backup provider and provider easy user interface to backup files to multiple devices. Listed down the steps that will help you to backup your laptop files to your desktop computer over the internet.

When you sync a folder to another computer, Sugarsync copies the folder and its contents from the first computer to the second computer. For example, if you had a folder called “Work Files”, you could sync it from your Desktop computer to your Laptop computer. Then you could access or change the contents of the folder from either of the computers. Once the folder is synced between the laptop and computer, SugarSync keeps the files in sync in both locations. Any changes you make to the files in the synced folder on one computer are automatically synced to the other computer.

Important: If you have a folder with the same name on more than one computer (like Documents or Music), you'll need to make sure to follow these instructions so you can properly merge the data across computers.

To sync a folder across computers:

Make sure you've already installed SugarSync Manager on each of your computers and added your folders to SugarSync.

1. In SugarSync Manager, click Manage Sync Folders.

2. In the Manage Sync Folders dialog box, click the name of the folder that you want to sync between computers. Click Sync.

Note: Folders that are backed up to the cloud, but not synced across computers, display in the lower part of the Manage Sync Folders window.

3. Choose the computer you want to sync to. Click OK.

5. Click OK to close the Manage Sync Folders dialog box.

6. Do one of the following:

If you are syncing to other computers, confirm the sync request from those devices. As soon as you accept the pending request, SugarSync syncs the folder to that computer. If a folder of the same name already exists on your current computer, you can decide whether to merge the folders, or move the folder of the same name to a new location. See Merging synced folders for more information.

If you're syncing from a remote computer, you'll be asked to choose a location for the synced folder. Then click OK.

5. The folder syncs across computers.

The next time you open the Manage Sync Folders dialog box, the folder appears in the upper, white area, showing that it's synced across computers.

You will need a file hosting service like Dropbox or Google Docs. It will depend on what types of files you have, though. In most cases, you will also need high-speed internet to get the job done with the least amount of time possible. Good luck!

You can use a VPN. As long as you are using the internet, you can also use a free cloud-based storage service like Google Drive. You get 15GB for free and it's a lot easier to use than a VPN.

You could get a USB Flash Drive, or get a crossover cable to connect the two computers, or connect both computers to a hub/router/switch.
