By this do you mean using the command prompt to open things etc.
Are you using windows vista?
If no then I can't help you, but if you are using vista follow these instructions:
Click -> Start
Click -> All programs
Click -> Accessories
Right click the command prompt and select "Run as administrator"
This should solve any problems you have with errors relating to the command prompt if you are using vista (xp is administrator by default)

You need to overide the memory protection loop in the executable. It would be easy, if you're a programmer. Im qualified in java, not c+, so i cant edit the program for you.

It sounds as if the dos program is trying to access an incorrect area of memory.
I need more details, what is the program, what is your operating system and what is the full error message please?

could be faulty memory. try swapping out a stick or running a MEMTEST program to verify this.

Here's an ideas page for you on how to get, hopefully, DOS games to run with XP which has no actual DOS shell which is why you're having problems.
