I have a Lenovo Thinkpad and when I try to turn it on it beeps, then on a black screen it says there's a fan error, and then it shuts down. Earlier, my laptop was overheating, so I thought there was dust stuck in the laptop so I cleaned it out with compressed air. But now my laptop won't even turn on! Is there any way this can be repaired? I can't fix it myself so I was wondering if Staples easytech or Bestbuy's geeksquad would work. Also, how much would these repairs costs?

Your IBM is keeping your PC safe or at least trying to.

when you switch on a pc the CPU gets a BIG rush of heat

and it must lose it quickly. so your fan is run at high speed for

a few seconds. If you press the power on switch 6 or 7 times

quickly it will most likely burn out the cpu destroying it

so dont do it.

over a period of time fans accumulate dust, and that soaks up

any liquids / mositure in the air. these then get cooked on the fan

and it gets heavier and stickier depending on the cleanliness

of the air. eventually a fan will sieze and need replacing.

not to mention the gaps in the heatsink getting clogged too.

usually all you have to do is remove the keyboard

and the heatsink / fan assembly is held on by up to four screws

and one tiny power cable. removing it is simple.

blowing in compressed air wont clean the heatsink properly

and wont do the fan much good either.

replace the heatsink and fan assembly

or if you can find just a fan then replace just that and clean the heatsink

Fans are generally specific to each pc make/model so you need the

exact right one.

=================

you wont have broke it, the motor will have seized due to dust and overheating, and lets

face it they do wear out! so the only blame you have is you kept using it when it

was overheating, and you shouldnt have.

heatsink/fans need cleaning at least every two years. thats a fact.

Contact Lenovo support and ask them what it would cost for the repairs. Lenovo parts in general are overpriced and crap to begin with. If it's a mainboard problem it can cost upwards of $250+. If it's just the fan figure around $65+.

The other option is buy an identical refurbished Thinkpad and just swap out the hard drive. Look on the bottom sticker and it will tell you the Model number. Like 6464-TAU.

Also be aware that Lenovo is horrible as designing good heat dissipation so get yourself a notebook cooler as well. I have a Zalman ZM-NC2000.

Most likely you need to replace the fan assembly and heat sink. Its a common problem with Thinkpads.
