Question:
Why is my new laptop so slow? Help with Disk Cleanup?

I purchased my HP laptop with Windows Vista and AMD Turion X2 for school about a year ago, and I don't understand why it's so slow. I did not install any new programs and basically left everything alone as it was when I first got it. I barely have any documents from school, a few pictures, and a few songs. Internet Explorer is really slow, but that is probably due to my internet speed (even though it is supposed to be DSL).

It takes a while for programs to load, and a long time for the laptop to start up and shut down. Every time I log on to the lap top, I look at the bottom right corner where all the open programs are shown, and exit the ones that I do not need to use for the day.... but the laptop remains really slow.

I delete all the temporary internet files, cookies, and history for Internet Explorer daily, after I finish using it. Afterwards, I go to "My Computer" to do a disk cleanup, which does not even help. It says that there is a total of 536 MB, most of which are from "Debug dump files," but nothing ever clears up. All of that MB just stays in my computer, and for some reason does not clear up, even though I check and "Ok" everything.

What can I do to clear up the memory? How can I make my laptop faster and more efficient?

Thank you so much for your time and for viewing! :)

' with Vista you need at least 3 gigs.'

Rubbish! I've had Vista Ultimate running, without Aero, on an Acer TM370 netbook with only 512 Mb of RAM and it worked fine. It LIKES more, but doesn't NEED it.

To the question:....

Firstly, remove any unwanted/unused programs using 'Add/Remove programs'.

Right-click on your C: drive, select 'Properties' then 'Disk Cleanup', select everything, then click 'OK'. You can also delete all Restore Points except the most recent one.

If this fails:-

Run CCleaner, and clean your registry, temp files, etc. You can also get rid of restore points here.

Then run your anti-virus, do a FULL scan, repair/remove anything it finds.

Then run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware or similar, repair/remove anything it finds.

Defragment your hard-drive.

Re-boot, and your machine will be faster, AND have a lot more free space on your hard-drive.

Hope this helped.

You likely bought a cheap Lappy and you're paying for it now. You didn't say how much memory it has installed but with Vista you need at least 3 gigs.

The AMD processor doesn't help either.

You can download a free copy of CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/download install it and run a junk file scan as well as a registry scan and remove anything it finds.

Once that's completed run a defrag on your hard drive from system tools in the start menu.

If might take a while so be prepared.

If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by altering your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.

2. Click Run

3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

6. Click "OK"

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pcboostcleaner.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
