I want to upgrade a Macbook Pro's RAM from 512mb to 2GB but will RAM made only for Apple's Computers work with it or will any RAM work with it?
And if only RAM specifically made for Apple's Computers will work with it, which company has the best RAM available for it?

RAM by other manufactures will work but it needs to be the right kind! The best thing to do is visit crucial.com and use the memory advisor tool to select the right kind of RAM for your MacBook pro. Also, I wouldn't buy RAM from Apple, they're overpriced. You'll be able to find a good deal by searching the net.

1. does the script on the ID strip say 1x512?

or, 2x256?

2. We install lifetime warranty memory from any ofthe top companies.

3. There are only two slots in the MacBook. If you want to upgrade, suggest you get two 1GB strips, and pull, all the rest... It's the only way.

4. It must be faster than 1.5Ghz, cuz the slower MacBooks couldn't address over 1.5Gb of RAM.

5. Let a local Apple certified shop do the job to invoke the warranty, and you'll have some professionals who are on good terms with the Memory Corporations, and can be in your corner if the memory tanks!

Plus, whenever we take in a computer for any repair, we run the serial number and update if FREE, and check all the recalls, extended warranties, if any, with Apple!!!

Finally, when you open that unit, you really do need to be at an ESD static workstation!!! We get in units for repair all the time where the owner or their 'geek buddy' has toasted a $500.00 main logic board!

So, don't be STUPID, get some professional, guaranteed, memory and installation. Apple.com has lists of thousands of certified Apple Technicians. Yes, we'll even install YOUR memory strips, from a SEALED ENVELOPE!!!,but, we hope you'll buy good quality... bet you can guess why!

MacBook Pro

Since our last exciting episode, I've been using a 15" 2.6 GHz MacBook Pro. I chose the 100GB 7200 RPM drive and started with the default 1GB RAM.

I quickly learned that MacBooks are useless with the amount of memory provided if you use any non-native Rosetta-emulated apps (you will), so I maxed out the memory at 2GB by purchasing Apple's freakishly expensive RAM. I've since discovered that 3rd party RAM works just as well for half the price.

I miss the PCMCIA card slot for EVDO cards, and you could easily fry an egg on it, but it's a fantastic machine. Apple has exhibited its usual brilliance in the concurrent development of PPC and Intel versions of MacOS X. MacBooks are significantly snappier than PPC-based models and I've encountered no problems worth noting. We've bought non-Pro models as well, which are equally excellent, and for $150 more you can be even cooler (literally and figuratively) by ordering the black version.

I've also traded my Treo 650 for Samsung A900 (a.k.a. "Blade"), because I was tired of lugging Treos around and wanted something I could easily slip into a pocket. An added benefit of the A900 is you can use it as a modem on Sprint's EVDO network, which pretty much eliminates any dissatisfaction caused by the MacBook's missing PC card slot.

Apple computers & the parts used in them are designed by apple. No third party product is used on them. Hence any accessories that you may use on a PC are not compatible with Mac's.

Moreover their Logic Board design is very compact that everything is embedded. That’s why whenever you happen to have any specific issues with graphic card or network card Apple service center would replace the Logic board and not specifically the card (Which is not possible either). But incase of RAM’s they do replace it. However third party RAM’s sold in the market are not compatible with mac’s. I’ve seen ppl purchasing one and having endless problems with it.

I don't think you can use a third party RAM or any add-on card.

Hope this helps!!

Good Luck :-)

Two independent memory sources are:

www.crucial.com

www.kahlon.com

The have a "memory configurator" available. Enter your computer specifics and they'll tell you what kind of memory you can use. They also have some pretty good prices.

They also have an extensive FAQ section for general info.

You should work with your local APPLE dealer. He won't steer you wrong.

But of you are looking for a reliable vendor that Guarantees that it will work for you, then visit

http://www.coastmemory.com/

Then pick APPLE and Go

Pick Macbook Pro

Then pick your specific model.

Good luck
