"Stuff" means two things - hardware and software. I see most of the people are answering soft, but I'll give you my 2 cents...

For Hardware, there are four things that make up the speed and response of the computer. They are (in this order)

- RAM

- Processor

- Hard Drive - particularly the free space

- Network connection

So, you want to max out your ram, all 2006-2007 processors are going to be fine but the duo core ones are really fast, and get a big hard drive. You'll need it.

Also - get a hardware warranty. Laptops die in three years and it will be good to be able to fix it for free.

Software - most come w/ XP or Vista. Vista is pretty sweet. You'll need the MS Office suite, but figure out what you want from there before you invest. Word, Excel, Powerpoint for sure - but do you make signs, web pages, databases, or things like that? You might need more apps then. See link 1.

Then, it depends on the other things you want to do. research the software before you put it on. Get a virus scanner (McAfee or Symantec) and a firewall - at least a software one. McAfee has a nice package of these things.

Lastly, you might want to consider a tablet PC if you do a lot of writing and drawing. Check the third link for more on that.

well what is its main purpose. yeah you say that you are going to use it for everything but like what? if you are talking programs wise, then i would suggest on having microsoft office, internet explorer or firefox (which you can download), some type of picture editing software, and of course your anti-virus software and if you are a music lover than a software that you use the most. also a lot of systems are coming with VISTA now so make sure you get that on it as well. VISTA has some pretty cool features to it.
