Question:
Is it worth switching to Vista yet? Or should I wait for the next Service Pack?
2009-04-15 20:15:19 UTC
I'm on an HP Pavilion dv9000. Complete waste of money, if you ask me. It's had so many problems, that it rivals that massive amounts of issues I had with my Mac.

Lately, the screen has not been showing up on start up. It's just black. Nothing, no cursor, no boot up screen. Nothing. It does it coming back from sleep too. I'm praying its an update issue since it's only been happening for a week or too, but it could realistically be the motherboard or video card, right?

In any case, I got a free upgrade to Vista when I bought the computer in 2006, but when I did it, I hated it. The webcam wouldn't work and it had random blue screen shutdowns. Needless to say, I had to revert back to XP. I'm thinking with the new service pack out, I could install it again and it MIGHT fix the screen problem I'm having.

What do you techs think? Is it worth it? Or will it not even solve the issue?

Any HAVE solution to my problem? I've tried everything! PC wouldn't let me do a system restore, I did that take the battery out and hold the power button trick, and nothing works. I'm trying everything before it comes down to a system recovery.

Help please!

What you mentioned sounds like a Driver issue or software issue if it's recently started happening with no new hardware changes. Realistically I'd try removing the Video card and switching it to an integrated video card on your mother board. Either way it could be multiple issues, but from what it sounds if it just happened recently, it's probably a Driver issue or you might have a sudden hardware failure.

As for the Vista problem. That's a driver error, try upgrading the drivers. But the blue screens once again might indicate that it is a hardware issue. The information here isn't enough to tell whether or not the problem is or isn't.

But for the most part, I'd wait till Windows 7, it blows the crap outta Windows Vista

Well since you have a free upgrade I'd say HELL YEAH install it. I like Vista way more than XP, but the fact of the matter is that XP is still more stable. It very well may not solve your problem.

If you DO upgrade and you find you're still having problems then you need to find out whether it's specifically a windows thing or a hardware thing. I'd recommend trying out linux to see if the problems persist across OSs. If they do, they may not manifest themselves in exactly the same way (although they may) but you'll be able to spot them. If they don't it may in fact be a windows specific problem.

System restore and system recovery always seem retarded to me. I don't like them, they're for noobs. Chances are after doing one you'll just have the same problems anyway, what you need to do if it comes down to it is format your partition and install windows from scratch. Get a clean install on there. Sure you'll have to get ahold of your drivers and codecs and stuff, but if you install Vista, it's way better at finding them on it's own than XP is.

The screen being black thing, I have that problem with an older laptop I have, and it seems to be a hardware issue as it happens before the boot procedure even gets going. The only thing that fixes it is turning it off and on until the screen decides it wants to work.

Your BEST option is to wait until september. Windows 7 will be launched then.

Windows vista will work now. there are no long the same bugs you had when you first got it, and windows 7 is built off the same database for drivers that vista built so everything will ork fine now.

A lot of people still think there are compatibility issues with vista, btu those ARE a thing of the past.

Windows 7 will be the shinign city on the hill, but you can convert to vista now if oyu like. the party is just fine where I am. It's your choice

Hope this helps

EDIT: to toni, windows 7 doesn't come out in july. I don't know where you get your sources but july is when the beta testing ends. the os won't be available for public liesensing unitlt he early fall. there isn't even a deffinate release date yet.

Windows Vista is worth the upgrade f you know how to maintain it yourself. I'm currently using Vista Home Premium on a Toshiba Satellite M200 and I experience no problems whatsoever. Yes, Vista is a resource hog but I bought more RAM to make it 1.5GB and it runs just fine. Boot time is less than 40 seconds and its fast for me. I installed heaps of programs from AutoCAD 2009, Visual FoxPro, MATLAB, Adobe After Effects, and a lot games too. With all of those programs, the thoery is that Vista will slow down, indeed for some but my computer never showed any signs of problems. After installing Service Pack 1, Vista was abit faster than before and more programs were supported. I am currently tesing Service Pack 2 and my opinion is, Vista is getting faster and faster.

The bottomline, you must know how to maintain your computer.

If you did not like Vista a service pack will not help and one is not likely from Microsoft as Vista is being replaced with Windows 7 shortly.

As to your other problems HP has had issues with all you mentioned and you should contact them about free repairs as on lots of their lap tops the mother board is having to be replaced for bad wireless/video/graphics cards. Go to: http://www.hp.com and check the notices out.

Hope this helps

Install vista, sp2 is just around the corner its already in rtm-escrow stage. than again when windows 7 comes out you should probly wait for the first service pack.

I have a vista and it is fine, except the periodic crashes and closing of programs. In my opinion, opt for a mac then install a windows program so that you can use both I mean the mac is safer because there is a lack of hackers working on that plus it is a lot more reliable, however applications are a bit different.

Stick with XP. Vista is still a piece of crap OS. I dont think i will be upgrading for quite some time. I might wait for the next OS.

i would wait until windows 7 comes out to swap to it, and dual boot it with XP when you do, as XP is and always will be the best, and windows 7 is good, as it doesn't have as many issues as vista, but it will never be as good as windows XP
