The cursor (touchpad) on my laptop keeps going sensitive and difficult to move. It starts becoming laboured and wont move where I want it to go and it clicks on anything it goes over. Then it gradually starts getting worse til it wont work at all, then after a while it starts working again. And then a couple of hours later this starts all again.
What can I do, can I fix it?

Disable the touchpad, this always takes preference over the mouse (if one is attached). Use a USB mouse to control the cursor

Hi

these devices are not meant as a full time use device.

get yourself a mouse and plug it in a usb mouse will plug in to most p.c's

get an optical one then the perils associated with the ball will not be a problem.

stay with a wire as the wireless ones can be as bad if not worse than a pad.

Why don't you then just buy yourself an external USB mouse and plug it in.

Reboot your laptop so it can load the drivers and then disable the touch pad.

So simple and you can buy mice for about a fiver now.

A fix is unlikely to be economical. You can buy small optical mice which connect via usb. They work well on any surface.
