Well, one that could be replaced easily... since most students are less responsible than the average citizen.

if the laptop is in your backpack and you toss it on the bed.. CRUNCH!

If you are studying late at night and you accidentally knock that Amp Energy Drink into your keyboard... FIZZLE!

If you invite a friend over and they excitedly jump up and down over something, and knock it off your desk... CRASH!

If Your laptop is still in your backpack and you place the backpack gently on your bed, then later flop down on the bed in exhaustion... CRACK!

If you are studying on the floor, and your room is suddenly filled with people you didn't expect, and a foot ends up in your keyboard... KAPOW!

Now... these are all things that have happened to student's laptops... I know, because the students or their parents brought the laptops to me for repair at the shop I worked at.

So what kind of laptop should you buy? The least expensive one that will do the tasks you need. What tasks do you need your laptop to do? Surf the web, allow you to write papers, let you listen to music, and let you watch movies... AND THAT IS ALL! If you are playing games on your laptop, you are wasting time that would be better dedicated to school-related activities.

With all that in mind, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Satellite+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Celeron%26%23174%3B+Processor+-+Silver/9716078.p?id=1218158633527&skuId=9716078 There is a great Toshiba for $399.

My advice is usage wise :

Some best netbook (mini laptop)

(1) Lenovo S10-3 ($349) - A great companion for student life.

(2) Lenovo S10-3t ($449 to $600) - A great tablet netbook, that I have ever used. I firstly wanted to go for Ipad, but seeing this tablet, I forget all the techgadgets, and just grabbed. I am answering you from this device.

Regular Laptops

(1) HP Probook ($649) (amazon)

(2) DELL Inspiron 15 or 14 (customizable ) a great laptop with most modern hardware, but price is arount $749 to $800

my advice for customization of Dell Inspiron 14 or 15

Intel Core i3

4 GB DDR3 Ram

320 GB or 500 GB Harddisk

TRUE HD lcd panel(cost you more $50)

512 MB graphic

(above spec. are great for this laptop)

May be I have answered you in lengthy description, final advice is read as much reviews on net about laptop you are going to buy before buying. All the best.

I personally like Dell. I like it because I found great Dell Coupon Codes at http://www.CouponWorks.com plus I like it because they have really good warranty. Mine had some issues and they came out next day to replace a part. I did not have to mess with taking it in or mailing it anywhere (ps: upgrade the warranty to at home service).

I also like Dell because I can customize it easily online with some great features. Also hearing from friend about their HP, or gateway, or whatever else having problems I had only 1 in 4 years and it was due to my own fault. So all that said, go into a store like bestbuy and play with them until you feel comfortable with one then find the best deal somewhere online. All in all I recommend Dell.
