Question:
Computer running slow/low virtual memory/too many applications and processes running?

My computer is running really slowly. It takes ages to start up, keeps crashing and applications take ages to access. It keeps saying that its low on virtual memory and I have removed any unneccesary applications; when I ctrl+alt+del to try to end things when the start up is so slow and it crashes, it indicates that 24 applications are running on the task manager.
These include: wuaauclt, mantispm, google updater, spoolsvc, scanning process, explorer, ctfmon, wscntfy, vsmon, realsched, alg.exe, svchost (system, network, service, system), zlclient, Belkngwcui, LSASS, services, Winlogon, Csrr, Smss, System, System Idle Process.

Could this be responsible for the low virtual memory? If so how do I stop them automatically running? And what applications should I switch off? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

add more RAM... it will give sort of a breathing space for your application@process to run.... and also for slow start up.. you can check at RUN > msconfig (for windows) and disable some unnecessary startup process.. hope it helps...

It depends usually on the specs of your pc. If you are getting virtual memory errors its because you have too many applications accessing memory but not enough memory so it uses hard drive space as virtual memory as it needs it and then returns it to the system once it calms down. But if it never calms down and exceeds the virtual memory limit then you see that message You can try increasing your virtual memory by right clicking "my computer " and selecting properties -->advanced-->settings under performance. Try doublng the number in the box at the bottom. This is only a temp fix however, the real solution is to add more ram or reduce the amount of processes running. I see you have Zonealarm running that can be a big resource hog try disabling it temporarily and see if that alleviates any of the slowness. Also do a defrag of your harddrive check your startup folder from start--->programs--->startup and removed things that dont need to be there there are more things you can do too much to list but this is a good start at least

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner

Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.

To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:

Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.

Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.

afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.

The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.

If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)

The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).

Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.

Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

I think you have disabled Virtual Memory.

Open System Properties(Choose Properties by Right clicking my Computer).

Go to Advanced Tab and Performance Settings.

Advanced Tab again.

you will see virtual memory section on that tab. Check how much have you configured and change it to recommended.

Also if you have less RAM, consider upgrading.

You are going to need to upgrade your RAM. That will improve your virtual memory drastically! What kind of computer do you have?
