Why do we use mac computers when there is cheaper window computers? As far as I know, there are many problems associated with using mac. To be honest, I find it tempting to buy a mac laptop. I am new to macintosh. Does anyone have any ideas why mac should be used? Thanks in advance.

Why do we run Microsoft Windows on a computer when there is Linux or BSD for example which is free of charge? I am just asking this rhetorical question to make you see that cheap does not necessarily mean better.

Microsoft Windows is the most commonly used operating system. When you purchase a new, branded computer it often comes preloaded with Microsoft Windows. This new, branded computer has been made by HP, Dell, or any other manufacturer. They have assembled the hardware, loaded Microsoft Windows on it, installed the drivers for the hardware, et cetera. Microsoft Windows was not made especially for this computer. Microsoft does not make computers.

Every Mac comes with Mac OS X as an operating system. Apple creates both the hardware, the Mac, as well as the operating system, Mac OS X. They are made for each other, no third party drivers are required. This makes Mac OS X much more stable than Microsoft Windows. Mac OS X is not very hardware resource consuming, meaning that when you would run Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X on the same hardware, Mac OS X would load faster and be more responsive.

I have no idea what problems you are referring to, as there are zero. Mac OS X is the most easy to use operating system. There are zero viruses in the wild for Mac OS X which do not require user interaction. Before people make remarks that there are viruses for Mac OS X, reread my last sentence, especially the part: "which do not require user interaction". If you would have to write down a percentage of viruses which are intended for Microsoft Windows and its applications versus Mac OS X and its applications, there would be less (!) than 1% of viruses for Mac OS X and its applications.

As for the Mac itself, they are well designed and durable. Apple does not release new Macs every month like companies such as HP, Dell, et cetera, but sticks to a release schedule. Due to this schedule Macs keep their value much more than any other computer or laptop.

One thing to keep in mind, but this is not a problem, is that software which is intended for Microsoft Windows will not run on Mac OS X and the other way around, just like software which is intended for Linux or BSD will not run on Microsoft Windows and the other way around. You are not allowed to install Mac OS X on any other device than on a Mac, you can however install Microsoft Windows on your Mac, next to Mac OS X. Apple supplies a nice tool for this called Boot Camp which comes with Mac OS X. You can use Microsoft Windows then for gaming if you want.

Something else to add:

Although it is true, that OSx is more stable, that still isn't any reason to dish out 500-600 dollars more, on a computer with half the specs. Instead of using Windows, try Linux Mint. Its based off of Unix (same as OSx) yet its completely free, and is even more stable then OSx or Windows. Save money, and a stable OS? Thats a good deal.

Oh, and by the way, in like 95% of cases, it isn't Windows crashing, its corrupt registry files for drivers, or incorrect drivers that have been downloaded onto a PC that causes it to crash. This isn't a Windows error, its much more like a user error. Every user should keep up to date with what needs to be downloaded, and make sure that everything is compatible with the system that you're using.

Knowledge is power.

Arie, your wrong about so, so many things.

First off, Mac does not "make" its own hardware, thats insane. They use everything that PC uses. The HD may be from WD, the mobo from ASUS, graphics from ATI, and their processors are from Intel.

Saying there are zero problems with a mac means you are clearly infatuated with your computer. EVERYTHING, literally, everything has problems. The human body is one of the most efficent, well designed if you will, piece of engineering, and it still has problems. So unless Steve Jobs, and everyone else emplyoed at Apple Inc are perfect, there is no way that mac has zero problems.

no, but do you know what they do? They release "generations" which is all a marketing scheme.

How come they couldn't put a camera, and a USB hub on an iPad when it first came out? They've had that stuff on there technology for years, and if they're that dumb, then maybe I guess they wouldn't be able to figure it out.

Whenever a technology comes out, its old. That technology have been worked on for at least the last year, and by the time they come out with another one, they also already have on developed and ready to go.

No, you're not allowed to use Mac on a PC machine. But it doesn't mean its impossible. Its not like Mac made some magic wall that doesn't allow it to approach a PC. And its not like its because Mac was so well designed that allows it to use Windows OS, its just that Windows makes its self compatible with everything (to some working degree of course. Again, Knowledge is Power)

Mac isn't any better for that. Plus, why would your entire comment be about how great Mac is, and how bad Windows is, if you end it with saying that you can run Windows on Mac? That seems like a really silly thing to add.

Think of MACs like Fisher Price's 'My First Computer'. They are designed to be extremely user friendly...to the point that it is difficult to screw them up since the user has so little control over the system. The technology behind the hardware is often 2 generations behind what one would consider a bleedling edge PC or Linux box. They are indeed well suited for business class multimedia applications and graphical design. But anything that brings a serious workload to the processor such as CAD or high end games will be sluggish or unresponsive completely.

On the other side of the spectrum.... They are generally more aesthetically appealing. They are extremely simple to use. And for most users, who do little more then type papers or sign into facebook....Macs can do everything needed of them.

EDIT: The issue of viruses is not nearly as true today as it was 3 years ago. The fact is, since PCs are far more common; most viruses are written for DOS/NT based OSs. As Macs become more prevalent, as in recent years, more and more viruses will be written to function on their platforms as well.

It doesn't crash as often as Windows. OSx is a more stable platform. It also isn't nearly as susceptible to viruses and spyware. It's superior for graphic design and video editing.

However, PC is much better than Mac when it comes to video games - though Mac is trying to catch up. I'd say if video games are important to you, get a PC. If they aren't, get a Mac.

Looks, and price.

Yeah. And they CAN get viruses.
