Question:
Laptop screen brightness stuck on dim - Windows 8.1?
?

Hi I have a Lenovo ideapad P400 Touch laptop that I just bought back in April with Windows 8 on it.

And about a month ago I upgraded it to the Windows 8.1 preview.

Last night I was messing with the brightness and I took it down to the lowest it can get, and then when I tried to move the slider back up to make my screen brighter the slider moved but my screen stayed on dim.

I've gone through the power plans and made sure everything checked out and also made sure all my drivers were updated. I've done a check for a windows update and I am up to date.

I don't have any kind of light sensor to my knowledge that is on and would cause my screen to be dim.

One interesting note though I did an "improve power usage" scan to see what it would come up with and it says "screen saver is enabled - problem not fixed" and under that it says "brightness too high - problem fixed" but when I adjust my slider it still does nothing.

I've done a little research and the best explanation I can come up with is Lenovo's drivers are actually for windows 7 and don't take into account the new code of windows 8. This causing things to not work properly.

And the only fixes I can come up with is wipe windows 8 off my computer and re-install it. Or wait til Lenovo comes out with drivers for windows 8.

I don't know how to un-install and re-install win8 and I really don't think I can just sit here and wait while I can barley see the screen on my pretty much brand new $900 laptop.

Any help here??

I have a Lenovo P400 Touch. I was able to fix the non-working brightness control! What I did was install the Intel video driver off of Lenovo's web page, which actually downgraded from my current version. However, this method did fully fix the issue, as I now have full control over the brightness settings.

As for non-Lenovo users, try doing the same process for your particular company's drivers from their website, and see how it goes!

This seems to be a problem with the Intel HD 4000 display driver with Windows 8.1

The same problem happened to me on my new Samsung Ativ Book 8 after upgrade to 8.1

The adaptive brightness control dimmed my display at which point I couldn't adjust the brightness via any method.

A bit of research throws up many users of at least HP, Lenovo & Samsung are possible affected by this bug.

I currently have Intel HD Graphics 4000 driver version 10.18.10.3316 installed.

Check in Control Panel->Hardware and Sound->Device Manager & expand the Display Adapters node.

Click Update Driver->Browse computer for driver software

followed by "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

You should see at least one previous version of your driver and the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter.

I reverted my HD 4000 driver to version 9.17.10.2932 and that did nothing.

I switched to the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and that returned me to full brightness but I lost me second screen.

Reverted again back to HD 4000 10.18.3316 and now have full brightness but the brightness is still stuck (i.e. can't change it).

I guess I'll wait now for an Intel fix...

Oh, yeah. It seems to have worked, like even before the driver was completely reinstalled. My screen just all of a sudden brightened up to full. Amazing. Yes, is is an older version of the driver. That made me wary at first but I went through with it as per your advice...thanks. I have my $900 laptop back as well. :)

Anmoll's solution worked for me. Upon choosing "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" an earlier version of Intel HD (from 2012) was listed, as was the microsoft basic display driver. I updated to the former which fixed the problem.....so far so good.

It probably put you on Power Saver Mode. Change it to Balanced or Custom.

I found a fix!! Go to Control Panel>Display>Adjust Resolution>Click advanced settings>click properties>click driver tab... After you click update driver, it will ask you "how you want to search for driver software;" click "browse my computer for software" then next window choose "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer;" you'll see compatible drivers, look for "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" click next> I did it and yes!!!!! Back to normal brightness!!!! What a relief, my Lenovo IdeaPad P500 is only one year old since 10/28/2012
