My laptop was broken and I would like to retrieve the data from the laptop hard drive (Samsung MP0402H 40gb) on my pc? I am not sure what I would need to do to read it? What connection cord would I use? How would I read it on my desktop pc (windows xp)?

The easiest thing to do is take the hard drive out and put it in an external enclosure that plugs into a USB port. YOu can pick one up for $35. It will appear on your pc as another drive (E: most likely).

Taking the drive out is simple - it's under a cover on the bottom or side of the laptop, and usually has a screw holding it in. Google the model number and you will find details of how to get the disk out if it's not obvious.

There are two sizes of disks - get the 2.5" enclosure for a laptop disk.

This is a relatively easy task...

The easiest way, and the way I would do it is as follows.

1. Buy an external hard drive enclosure from an electronics store, this connects via USB cable to your computer, make sure that the external hard drive enclosure supports 2.5 inch drives (laptop drives).

2. Consult your laptops manual, and use a screw driver and any other necessary equipment to remove the laptop's hard drive.

3. Follow the instructions that came with your external hard drive enclosure to attach/install the laptop's 2.5 inch drive.

4. Follow any other instructions that came with your external hard drive enclosure

5. Plug hard drive into computer, after your computer recognizes the drive open it up in windows explorer and copy your files.

Good Luck!

They sell USB connectors to interface with hard drives. I have one that supports SATA and EIDE (both 2.5" and 3.5").

depends, if the laptop doesn't have power then you can't access it, what you may need to do is get a hard drive enclosure http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2781&name=2.5-external-drive-enclosure
