Question:
Laptop vs. Netbook ... Is an Eee PC good?

I've been looking for a while now to find a basic laptop/netbook.

I need something that is cheap, durable, portable, and has a Microsoft Word-like program and internet capabilities.

I have found an Eee PC which seems nice and perfect for my needs.

Is an Eee PC good? Is it a netbook or a laptop? What is your opinion about it? Should I get it or not?

If the Eee PC is not good, what is a better laptop or netbook?

What are netbooks, anyway? Compared to a laptop, which is better?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, the very well known Asus EeePC is a great little netbook. A netbook is simply something similar to a laptop, with weaker and fewer features. For instance, Netbooks do not have optical drives (CD drives). Netbooks have weaker processors (a netbook might have an Intel Atom 1.6ghz single core processor, while most laptops nowadays have at least a dual core 1.8ghz processor). Netbooks have smaller storage devices (hard drives).

Now, as far as an Office Suite... you can either pay $300 for Microsoft Office, or you can download Open Office for free http://www.openoffice.org It comes with a suite of programs that will allow you to do the same things as if you had Microsoft Office, and it will allow you to open, edit, and save in Microsoft formats. So, regardless if whether or not you get a laptop or a netbook, you just download this software and off you go. Note, that NO DEVICE that you purchase will come with a free copy of Microsoft Office.

Which is better? If you want to watch DVDs or install software from a disc, then a laptop is better... because you cannot do those things with a netbook. If you want a larger screen, a laptop is better. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with a netbook.

I assume you are referring to the Asus Eee Pc. Great little machines, just don't buy the cheapest one and you should be safe.

A netbook is basically a smaller version of a laptop. As a rule of thumb, what you gain in portability, you lose in processing speed. However, It runs Word, Outlook and internet browsers fine.

If you plan to spend the whole day in front of the screen, id advise you to go for a laptop as you have way more screen real-estate to play with. The little netbooks can get annoying after a few hours.

Just a word of warning, if you plan on running any high performance software (eg Adobe Photoshop, games, etc) at all don't even think about getting a netbook.

Before you make your decision, I'd advise you to go to your local IT store and just type a paragraph on a netbook. It feels a bit different and you might not like it.

Hope this helps.

I HAVE NEVER EVER HEARD OF A Eee PC

Just get a laptop that is popular!
