After homestead windows has loaded, seem on the taskbar close to the clock, the icons are all classes operating at start up which will sluggish-down the boot up, enter msconfig into the instructions > start up-up tab and untick all of your classes you comprehend so that they don't run at start up-up

Hi,

Freeing up space will only improve your speed if you defragement the drive and then it will not be really noticeable.

The speed of a pc is down to the hardware and the amount of applications that you are running and the amount of memory you have.

The less apps running the more cpu time is available.

So remove some of the programs that run at startup, see if you can add more ram.

Well I would like to know how you know there is 4GB used by programs & where did you get that information?

What operating system are you using?

Has your 60 GB been divided into 2 drives 15 GB + 45 GB?

Also, the amount of storage space used won't slow your computer much, what will slow your computer is processes running in the background and ALL THE SOFTWARE WITH AUTOMATIC UPDATES, turn that junk off & uninstall all the crap you don't use.

And sorry but if you have a 60GB laptop it must be ancient, are you using windows 2000?

Also, what are you trying to do that takes so long? surf the net? use a word processor? play games?

EDIT: Thumbs down for EVERYONE!? were their answers too complicated?

ANSWER: Just buy a new computer, then you will realize the need for more patience when trying to solve computer problems.

Empty your recycle bin.

Do a sweep of your computer.

Check for viruses as that can be the cause too.

Clear the cache, cookies and all that good stuff.

Bring up the task manager and close alll the unnecessary programs (That one gets mine a lot)

Ok judging from the total space on your laptop I'm guessing its an old one since quite a lot come with 250-500gb now. Therefore your laptop is likely to be pretty slow no matter what.

I'm assuming you understand the more you have on your laptop the slower it will go. Now some of that 60GB you have will be used up by the operating system itself being installed on there (I'm guessing windows XP) so that is where some of your space has gone. My solutions to speeding it up are as follows;

Get Ccleaner and run it. This finds unneccassary files saved on your pc, temporary files, emptys your recyle bin etc.

run disk defrag in your system tools. computers save stuff randomly like just throwing everything into your room. If you tidy your room everything is easier to find so its quicker to get that thing your looking for.

delete unneeded files. The less the computer has to look through, the quicker it is.

Now if you don't mind spending a bit of money the best option would be to buy a better laptop (If my guess on it being old is correct)

However if thats too much you could consider getting more RAM for it. which will allow it to run a bit quicker.

And storage wise you could consider an external hard drive. This could hold a lot of information so it is not clogging down your laptop. The downside is you'll only be able to access that data when its plugged into your laptop (Yes you can install programmes onto the external hard-drive such as games and word software although they wont work when its not plugged in). for a 500gb external you're looking at £40 or for £120 you can get 3TB.

In the end I don't think you'll be able to get a good amount of difference without a lot of upgrading or replacing the laptop. And for a decent laptop you'd want to make sure it has its own dedicated grphics card and an i5 processor. which is where the price of laptops will be jumping from £100ish to £3-400

if you just delete a program, the information is still on your computer, try going into the control panel from the start menu and select "uninstall programs", find things you will not use again and permantley delete them, that should help clear up some space

if all else fails you can wipe your hard drive, but them you lose everything and go back to factory settings

You can always:

-Get rid of the files you don't need anymore.

-Delete your history

Also, take a look at the link :)

Well, I can't tell you the answer because you haven't given very much information. What OS are you using? What do you mean by "programs"?

Empty your recycle bin.

When you delete something, it doesn't truly delete it. It puts it in the recycle bin in case you didn't mean to actually get rid of it.

The recycle bin is that garbage can on the desktop. If its full, it'll cause you to lag.
