Just today I started to get the blue screen of death on my computer. The problem might have been that I was running too many programs at the same time, and that is what I am assuming it was. I was trying to download a new version of iTunes and trying to convert some files to mp4. I have already tried going on to safe mode and deleting the programs that I suspected started this but so far nothing works. I run on windows7 on a toshiba laptop.

As a last resort you might need to fdisk, reformat your Toshiba laptop hard disk clean and reinstall OS. Before going that route, try following simple fixes to see if the problem goes away.

Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your Toshiba laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the laptop. This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your laptop on.

Boot in "safe mode". As it starts up press F8, the computer ask you if you'd like to start in safe mode. Highlight "safe mode" and press enter. See if your laptop works normal.

If it runs normal now, do the following maintenance and tune up,

Uninstall unnecessary programs and applications.

Scan with a antivirus program

Scan with a spyware/malware program

DEFRAG C:

CHKDSK C:

Clean up and repair registry problems.

Use external harddrive for all your future downloads.

If the problem persists, did you check if it could be your laptop power cord or power source problem? Defective or insufficient power supply might cause error messages that are misleading. Take the battery out and power on your Toshiba with the charger only. Make sure your laptop power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. Did you notice the power jack loose? You can find laptop power jack on ebay. Fixing and soldering the power jack requires professional skill though.

The charger green/blue LED should be on. If not, replace the defective charger. laptop battery charger has its own limited lifespan and does not last forever, consider buying a lifetime warranty charger online from company like topmic.com

My experience is the blue screen of death usually means the hard drive is bad. It's not really because you were doing a lot at once, per se--more than likely--but because you were trying to download to bad sectors on the hdd. Like the other person said, you might want to run chkdsk. If you don't know how to do it...you can boot back into safe mode, right-click on the 'C' drive under "Computer," select "Properties" and go to "Tools" to do "error-checking." Might want to back up files while you can start up the computer, too.

The other issue I'd think of is you downloaded a bad driver, i.e. you recently downloaded a program or installed hardware that is causing these crashes. I know on one of my laptops I had before, the internal camera that came with it caused blue screen crashes all the time after a while. If you have uninstalled any such programs, though, then that suggests this is not the issue. You can try System Restore from safe mode, or you can try "last known good configuration" when you first turn on the computer (I think if you hold 'f8' after you turn it on, you can see that option).

EDIT:

For Jenna Nguyen:

RAM is automatically cleared at shut down, the moment you power down your laptop all temporary operating data stored on RAM memory is wiped off, lost.

For the asker (Zane):

The Blue screen of death (BSOD) is caused by two things:

1. Most frequently it's a direct consequence of virus or other malware infection and system corruption due to the infection, the curse of Windows users.

2. Rarely, the BSOD it's due faulty or dead hardware

For number 1, read bellow for the detailed best solution...

You cannot safely, effectively and completely remove a virus infection in a Windows environment, as your operating system and antivirus protection can and will get corrupted.

Here is the best way to remove a virus:

What you should do if you know or suspect that your Windows computer was infected by a virus, worm, trojan or other malware:

Go to a different, healthy, non-infected PC or laptop and download both the BitDefender and the Kaspersky Anti-virus Recovery CD's (free downloads).

Download links for both:

http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/

http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk

Burn both downloaded iso files to CD with an iso burner software. If you do not have an iso burning software installed, I recommend getting the CDBurnerXP (free software) from here:

http://cdburnerxp.se/

Once you burned the recovery CD's, return to the infected computer and put the BitDefender Anti-virus Recovery CD in your CD/DVD drive and boot from CD (set your boot up options in BIOS to CD boot as first option if it does not boot from CD at first)

Once your infected computer boots into the Recovery CD Linux environment, first update the virus definition database from the Internet server, than perform a complete scan of your desktop computer or laptop (all hard drives and/or partitions). Remove (delete) any infections found, and shut down your desktop computer or laptop.

Remove the BitDefender Anti-virus Recovery CD and insert the Kaspersky Anti-virus Recovery CD.

Repeat the same procedure as for BitDefender above.

After scanning with those 2 Anti-virus Recovery CD's, your system should be virus free, and will function properly again.

Good luck.
