In order of best to worst (based on my preference):
HP
Dell
ASUS
Toshiba
ACER
No matter which brand you go with, there is always a chance of you buying a faulty product (aka lemon). That is why you should always invest the extra money on waranty. It is better to be safe than sorry. I bought my HP Pavilion dv8000 back in 2005, and it still works perfectly fine.

Laptop or desktop?????
ASUS is still pretty much the best but they are still pricey. If you talk to alot of people they will tell you ASUS' customer service sucks and I have found that to be true once. ASUS also does not have a toll-free tech support number that I am aware of. HP. Forget it. Overpriced hardware and sorry-*** printers. Personal experience on the printers and I have seen what they put inside their desktop cases. I can build a better machine for less until it comes to adding an LCD display. Toshiba was always known to make a good product and Gateway is mistakenly following IBM's proprietary route. They engineer their pc's so that you can't just go out and buy a replacement part, install it and have it work. It has been so long since I fixed a Gateway that I don't remember if that is true, but I have heard plenty of people tell me that. As far as Dell and Acer, someone has to finish last...

Well I can't tell you much about HP, Acer, or ASUS computers. This is what I can tell you from personal experience:
My father has had two Dell computers at his work since 1999. They still run, albeit a bit slow (but that's probably since they're still on Windows 98SE and are loaded with a lot of software). I have a Dell Dimension at home that I've had since 2001 (it was one of the first Windows XP computers) and it still runs fine (the CRT monitor did go out about a year ago though, but I suspect that's because I degaussed it too much); I have had a Dell Inspiron laptop since August 2008 and am very pleased with it. Before that I had a Toshiba laptop from May 2004 until it went out in August 2008, about a month after I upgraded the memory on it (of course). But I do have a 26" Toshiba CRT television at my house that has been working fine for over 15 years now.

I like ASUS.
I have the ASUS M51Vr.
Good thing is that it is normally cheaper than other brands and it normally has more warranty.
