I have laptop with C and D hard drives
C Drive is now showing only 2gb free memory from a 51 gb memory,
I usually save docs etc., onto USB, this apart i moved the balance of docs/pics/music onto D in a vain effort to gain more free disk space ( D drive has 33gb free out of 47 gb)

Looking at prev posts on memory issues, advice is to look to remove infrequently used programmes, but when add up the memory being used in Programmes, it only comes to 880MB. ( I would have to take it to a shop to get programmes removed as to what to remove without causing other issues)

Afraid i don't know anything much about computers, presumeably i looking in the wrong place for the other "chunk" of memory that is being used.

Also despite the fact i am saving nothing to C Drive....the available disk space is still going down :(

Any idea what is going on and what happens when the C drive gets full ?? does the computer crash.
I have previously backed up everything to an external hard drive, albeit i havn't done it for year or so (really need to do it...like now)

Help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Hi,

this will free up all your free space on both C & D drives so that windows can then work correctly again, i would defrag your drives about once every three weeks and use CCleaner to clear the rubbish off about every week.

can you please do the following to sort ALL your problems :-

Download CCleaner, install it and then run it, this will safely delete all your temp files etc for you, then reboot back into safe mode again (press F8 as it boots up) and defrag your hard drive to get all your free space back again, I think your system is full of rubbish and just needs a good cleanup.

CCleaner will also clean your reg files correctly as well, but please remember to reboot between doing a disc cleanup and a reg cleanup.

Defaggler will defrag your drive quickly and cleanly.

This will help you, (I promise).

http://www.defraggler.com/download

This is a completely free download and will not harm your system in any way.

Please use any “Filehippo” links as these are free download links.

That will sort out your HDD problems.

Now please do this as well:-

From your start menu go start > run then type “chkdsk C:/F” windows will then ask you to reboot your system as your system boots past your BIOS screens it will check and fix any errors on your hard drives for you, then it will boot back into windows again.

This should fix all your problems for you (well I hope so).

This will free up all your free space on your HDD so windows can then work correctly again.

P.S.

Also please do a REG file cleanup as this is the most common cause of slow systems.

Your system is full of rubbish and just needs a good cleanup so windows will then run correctly again.

This is completely FREE, easy to do, and most importantly WORKS so why not try this first??

hope this all helps you

hard drive space is not memory, it is storage.

So you have 2Gb left from a 51Gb space and D is showing 33Gb of free space from a further 47Gb. The best guess is you have a 120Gb hard drive with a hidden 10 to 13Gb partition that stores your recovery partition data.

You need to clear several things, mainly the temp files and this will recover some space, clear the system restore points (as long as the laptop is stable) and perhaps resize the restore point size.

In XP and Windows 7 you can do this easily (there is a slider to resize it) but in Vista you need to do this from the command prompt, and it is best you just clear them to regain the space.

ATF Cleaner by Atribune will clear the temp and cache files in one easy go, it works with XP, Vista and Windows7 and as a bonus, its free - http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1

Windows XP and Vista in particular make back ups of the updates and there is a way to clean these, but you need to be very confident in what you are doing to perform this task, get it wrong and it is not good news so this is not the place to inform you of how it is done.

If you have used nearly all the 50Gb space on C are you sure you have deleted the files you copied to D and not just simply copied the content but not deleted the originals?

You can right click on the C: drive from the My Computer icon, select properties, go to the general tab and use the disk clean up option and follow the instructions on what to clean.

What has been done is the "D" drive has been made too big, it only needs to be about 15GB. DO NOT try to change it yourself. You can't, and must not, save to the "D" drive.

If you can find a local computer repair shop, NOT PC world etc, ask them to re-size the partition.

The advice about is CCleaner etc is correct.

Get an external USB hard drive and store all your new stuff on there.
