I need to get a new laptop, but I'm wondering how to get my files (and maybe my programs too) onto it when i finally get it. Could I just put my old harddrive in?

Mainstream laptops uses 2.5" hard drives

Netbooks/Sublaptops MAY uses 1.8" hard drives.

The main problem would be to know whether the laptop uses Pata or Sata data transfer prots.

You CANNOT just put your old hard drive in the new laptop, the OS(operating system) will not recognize it, but you could buy(very cheap) an external USB hard drive adapter and plug your old hard drive into the new one that way.

you probably could, but I don't know why you would want to. if you are using Windows, you might even run into product key/verification issues.

I would just get an external drive (i.e. flash drive, external hard drive) and add the files to that.

or you might even be able to hook them both up to a network and transfer that way.

hope this helps. best wishes :D
