My old laptop extremely slow, how can I fix it in cheap way? I don't feel like throw it aways.?

My old laptop with Intel pentium III

1. Can I run the window in new external hard disk by ignoring the old internal hardisk? Because the hard disk in my laptop producing loud noise, so I assume that is the main reason my laptop slow.

Why not get a new internal drive and a 2.5" enclosure and put the old drive in the enclosure?



What do you want to do with the laptop? If you just want to do the basic stuff then consider installing a version of Linux on it.

Web browsing with Firefox, E-mail with Thunderbird, documents with Open Office.



Ubuntu seems to be a good version.



Generally speaking Linux runs on hardware at about the same apparent speed as Windows does on the next generation hardware.

It may be, but generally, slowness in computers isn't caused by the hard disk, it's caused by the amount of RAM you have. Windows XP itself requires a minimum of 256Mb just to run the OS, 512 Mb just to run anything else at a reasonable speed. Check the amount of RAM you have, in general, as time progresses, things will slow down because there are so many small moving parts, you can try replacing the hard disk, but I doubt that it'll speed it up any, you may be having hard disk issues in addition to insufficient RAM. Memory, or lack thereof, though, generally is the number 1 reason computers run slow. The problem with older computers is that it may not be compatible with larger amounts of RAM, so you'll want to check to make sure.

Sounds like it is quite old. The noise you hear may be the hard drive or it could be the fan going bad.



Your laptop has reached its limits. Additional RAM Memory helps a computer run faster, but I would not put additional RAM (unless it is free) into this old laptop.

Unfortunately, reinstalling Windows (not necessary reformatting the hard drive) is the BEST way to fix a slow laptop. If the laptop still has the ORIGINAL hard drive it should have "Recovery Partition" on it. Open My Computer and see if it is there. IF the computer has a Recovery Partition, press F11 at the computer start up. You will want to select "System Recovery" option to restore the computer to the factory settings. Make sure to back up that music. Once the computer is restored to factory setting all data will be lost.
