Is ram easy to install on a laptop?

I have a gateway P4 Hyper Thread laptop and It only has 512 MB of Ram, How do I upgrade it, do I need a special kind of stick of ram?

It's very very easy...all you do is unscrew it from the bottom of your laptop then just move the clips away from the memory and snap the memory out.

Just be aware that your laptop can only take so much memory. So if it says you can handle 1 Gb, then you either have to just add 512 memory module to the empty slot next to it. Now if it says it can handle 2GB, then buy the 1 Gb module if you can afford it. Reason is if you buy 512 and then later decide to upgrade to 1 Gb you lose the money on the 512 memory module. So better to buy 1 Gb then replace the other 512 Mb with a 1 Gb when you can afford it.

But this is if the Max memory is 2 GB.

If you go to Gateway website and click on support, they have at the bottom of that page a link "upgrade your memory now". Enter the serial number of your machine in there and they will tell you what type of memory you need. Note the price and type down on paper and then go shopping around to find the best price. Start with newegg.com, they have all types of memory and they are really reliable.

Make sure you have enough space to add memory. Often laptops have only 2 slots and if you have already used them up (2 sticks of 256) then you will need to remove them and replace them with 1 stick of 1GB. Or remove one and replace it with a 512MB for a total of 768MB.

On Gateway.com you can also look for the documentation on your laptop, where you will find a step by step guide on how to upgrade it with your new memory. Take a look at it and if it doesn't scare you, then you'll know you are up to it.

If you decide to go for it, make sure you remove the battery from your laptop and power adaptor cable. Don't forget to ground yourself before touching the inside of the laptop and the new memory stick.
