If I was God, I'd give every one a smart tablet rather than the Bible, with a well written account of my life, without four confusing versions of it.

Blame the Council of Nicaea. It took place 325 years after Christ's death and, among other things, was charged by the Roman Emperor Constantine with putting together 50 bibles so that the teachings of the church could be uniform. Of course, that book had to be OK with the newly converted Romans so a bunch of writings from the other "capitols" of early Christianity in the Middle East, Egypt (Alexandria) and Constantinople were tossed in the trash bin. These first 50 Bibles weren't the Bible we know today. It took centuries of political and religious wrangling and fighting to create today's Bible. Over the centuries, the 4 Gospels that were picked follow the same story-line but fill in different details. The Bible is like most history: the winners get to write it and they toss the ideas and teachings of the losers. When you remember that the Bible is as much a political document created by pre-Enlightenment men kissing their Emperors' and their kings' butts as much as it is a religious document reflecting and validating the power structure of the Roman Empire and the monarchies of Europe all the contradictions and magical whoo-haa make sense. The Bible is only as inspired as the power-impressed sycophants who put it together were. But it got the job done by creating a mass of feudal slaves and serfs who thought their low positions in life were determined by God and their suffering would be rewarded in Heaven - while the powerful among them lived with God's blessings like, uh... ...like kings.

Read the Bible as history and for its moral teachings and it's easy to see its usefulness. But you've got to see and remove the old Middle Eastern and old European cultural principles from it to get to the good stuff. Find a copy of The Jefferson Bible, maybe in your local library. Thomas Jefferson literally took scissors to the Gospels and removed all the magic and useless stuff leaving only teachings.

What, you don't think that oral traditions are a fit way for an omnipotent entity to preserve its vital message to mankind? It's almost like you're making sense and using basic common sense in the middle of a desolate wasteland devoid of it.

The pope recently said that god isn't afraid of new things, and while I respect this pope for showing a level of class and friendliness that the catholic church REALLY needed, he also shows the fundamental flaw with religion in this statement. It always seems this god of theirs changes his mind when they change their minds, oh wait…he is in their minds and only there.

I'm not confused by the Bible. Ever think the problem with "confusion" is on you?
