I have an Inspiron 1720 and I don't know where the printer port is. Can you please help me fast. I have a project for tomorrow and I can't find the port. When I try to print it comes out in symbols like %*^*& and so on.

Modern laptops don't have the ancient parallel ports. If your printer is not older than 10 years then you have an alternative USB option.Look at the back of the printer next to the parallel port.Buy a USB cable and connect it that way.

Since you are trying to print and it comes out as wierd characters that means you can connect the printer and you have wrong drivers.Go to the makers website in the support section find your model and download the latest drivers

If you are trying to print, and all you are getting is garbage, then you have the printer correctly attached (or nothing would be coming out). It appears that you are missing the drivers for the printer. Check to see if there is a CD that came with the printer, or go to the printer's manufacturer's web site and download the drivers from there.

Sorry, but your machine lacks both parallel and serial ports. I assume by "printer port" you're refering to the rapidly aging Centronics 25-pin parallel port interface, right? Unfortunately, few recent laptops have it, so you'll either need to replace your printer or go searching for a PCMCIA-> Paralell or USB->parallel adapter.

It likely doesnt have one...if youre looking to plug in an "old fashioned" parallel printer (the wide plug with all the pins in it)-these have been phased out in favor of USB printers...

They should use usb ports on a laptop.

Also don't forget to install the printer's driver.
