No you don't need a desktop PC.

The first thing is to connect your router to the telephone line using the filter provided, and connect the power.

When you first set up the wireless router you will need to connect your laptop to it using the network cable supplied and then in a web browser go to the configuration page they provide (might be something like http://192.168.0.1/). You then carry out the configuration, which at a minimum involves entering the username and password that your broadband provider has supplied.

Once that is all you set up you can then unplug the network cable from your laptop and connect to it wirelessly (I know that's not a real word!).

If the pc is really new it will be able to apply with the prompt router, all you want is one information superhighway connection out of your provider service (dsl or cable), after that you'll split this utilizing a router, and when you consider that your pc must be able to attempt this already, you should bypass prompt. i'm constructive in case you bypass down on your close by electronics keep they are oftentimes very a lot of help and also you should walk out of the keep without spending better than 50 funds. i for my area like Linksys products, although the tech help is terrible. Your question probable receives requested it a ideal purchase/ Circuit city representive atleast once an afternoon, so that they could feel free to assist.

wi-fi is for connecting to internet correct

dial-up is thro modem which needs a phone line

dsl / broadband could be via cable or phone line & is thro ethernet port

u'r laptop communicates with u'r router, fine

but the router needs to be connected by phone / cable whatever u'r local isp offers & a power connection

checkout local isp (internet service provider) & select suitable plan & enter into a subscription

in most likelyhood it takes a days time & their technician comes & installs the comminication
