Have you seen the OS on your laptop? If it is XP Prof, then you can not install the SP2 for XP Home. Anyway, the new installation of different language can not be done in WinXP version. That means, if you have XP Japan version, the SP can not install the eng version. Maybe you should give more detail about the burdens.

Try to find a Windows XP Home Edition with SP2 and Install the windows together.

Here's what I did after hours of bullshit attempts to install SP2 on my MD40954:



- Download XP SP1a (Even if you already installed SP1)

- Skip XP SP2 and install XP SP3



Use the "Standalone" versions.

Sounds like a Yugo of laptops. Try Win98 or get a new laptop.

From what I've seen, it's not all that necessary. Every computer I've ever built, I've only put SP1 on.
