They are the same kind of memory with a different interface. A flash drive is typically USB and will work on most computer. SD cards are usually used in digital cameras and PDA and require a card reader slot, which not all computers have. You want a flash drive (also called a thumb drive, keychain drive or USB drive). I've seen 8gb drives for < $30.

A flash drive plugs directly into the USB port, has the capability of holding much more than an SD card by means of "flash memory" and is larger in size and some could even be put on a key chain. An SD card is smaller in size. Think of it as a digital camera memory card. Those are SD cards. It is possible to use an SD card as a flash drive by means a card reader that plugs into the USB port.

A flash drive connect directly to your USB port. An SD card has to be put into a reader then connected. If you do not have a reader then stay with the flash drive. For large storage space you may want to consider an external hard drive instead.

Thats a flash drive.

Thats an sd card.

You might lose an sd card due to the small size so keep it in a safe place if you get one.

Also you can use your ipod as memory. Just enable it for disk use.
