Hi, Can anyone explain in very simple terms - as I not PC literate at all - how I would be able to transfer my files, folders, photos and music from my current notebook to a new laptop? They are both Sony VAIOs. Help!

You can take it one step father.

It sounds to me that you have no backup system for your data. Use this opportunity to buy an external hard drive and and backup program like Acronis True Image to start this new laptop on the way to doing things right.

As you know, when you get a new computer, the first thing you need to do is remove the unwanted added special 90 day programs and then install your own programs. This takes several hours.

After you finish you can make an image of the complete drive.

There are probably a million different ways to transfer data from one home PC to another that are not connected via some network.

You can either burn the data from the source computer onto a CD / DVD or copy it to a USB drive or an external hard disk and then transfer it to the destination computer.

But there's another very simple option for transferring data between computers using the USB data cable - the cables are pretty cheap, work even with old computers and you can transfer any amount of data in one go unlike CDs or Thumb Drives where you are limited to the capacity of the drive itself.

Another advantage - USB to USB transfer is a faster solution since you eliminate that extra step of writing data to a temporary storage [CD or USB Drive] before moving it to the final destination.

While any USB to USB data cable available on eBay would do the job, you may want to invest in the Easy transfer cables that can transfer data from Windows XP-based computer to the PC running Windows Vista using Windows Easy Transfer program.

Hi,

Get a memory stick (Flash drive / Pen Drive) with USB connectivity. Connect it to your notebook through USB slot. Your notebook will detect and create new drive in "My Computer". Also a new Icon is displayed in the task bar. Copy your files and folders to this new drive.

To remove the flash drive, click on the icon on the taskbar and click on 'safely remove the removable disk'.

Do the same steps with your new notepad and paste the files and folders.

You can get an Easy-transfer cable, which plugs into a USB port on both computers, and move your data over. It won't transfer programs though. Walmart and Target should carry them, and places like OfficeMax, Office Depot, and possibly Staples. It will look like a regular USB cable with a small block in the middle.

Googles online results:

Buy a usb memory stick and send your files to that - highlight file - right click and then send to "device" - then do the same in reverse onto your laptop

I recommend AVCWare iPod to iPod/Computer/iTunes Transfer which can transfer your iPod and iPhone music, video, playlist, photos back to computer and iTunes. If you own more than one iPods, AVCWare iPod to iPod/Computer/iTunes Transfer can simultaneously manage all the iPods in the same interface, you may transfer files among these iPods by drag-and-drop. Hope it helps!

Follow Mike B's advice. Make a back up before (like me) you loose all types of photos I can't replace.
