If you have an OS disk that can boot the Mac then hold down the C key on startup, go through the boot up and first couple of screens and when you can pick the menus at the top of the screen you should see one option to reset the password.

This will work unless they have locked out the option to reset the password before you bought it.

Haskell, that's the procedure to reset the open firmware password. It does NOTHING for the OS password.

Look up the procedure for a single user mode password reset. You can basically reset the setup assistant and create a new admin account, but the procedure varies depending on the version of OS X you're using. It would probably be easier to get ahold of a Mac OS 10.3 CD set and use those to wipe it clean.

Ask the previous owner for the password.

Use the supplied disks to change the password.

No Disks? Call Apple to request them. Apple may charge a fee for them.
