No, laptops, will go into hibernate mode, auto shutdown or "sleep" depending on how you have them set up.

It doesn't just "power off" - even if the screen goes blank straightaway

Answer from a computer geek--->

Here's how to check what your computer is supposed to do when it closes:

1.Open windows explorer (this is different from internet explorer, one way to get there is to open my documents) and type "Display" in the address bar or go to control panel and click display.

2. After the "Display Properties" dialog appears, choose the Screen Saver tab. Don't worry, we won't be messing with your screensaver.

3. In this tab, the group box at the bottom labeled 'Monitor Power' contains a push button that reads "Power...". Click this and a "Power Options Properties" Dialog should pop up.

Under the "Advanced" tab, there is a group box labeled "Power Buttons" that allows you to configure what happens when certain power-related actions take place. You can customize what happens when you press the power and sleep buttons, as well as what should be done when your laptop lid is closed (will not show up on desktop computers).

Your options are:

*Hibernate (If hibernation is enabled)

*Stand By

*Do Nothing

*Shut down

You may also have additional options not listed here.

I reccomend 'Do Nothing'. Even though this may not sound like a very good choice, it is best because when you open your computer, the screen flickers on and there is your desktop waiting for you. When I listen to music on my laptop, I shut my lid because I am not using my screen and the sound stutters for a few seconds, appearing frozen, and then continues normally. The same happens when I open it, it freezes for a few seconds. Even if your PC is slow, your computer should resume normal operation eventually with this option selected. Stand By would be the next best choice, but it takes a little while to get into stan by mode. If you reopen your lid while your PC is attempting to go to stand by mode, i can almost guarantee a freeze or slow down. The last thing I would reccomend is shut down, unless you only close your lid to put your laptop away. Hibernate is another story.

The best thing to do is close your lid when the machine is idle, or shut it down or put it in stand by beforehand.

Well that's all the time I have, gotta go setup my new daul-monitor graphics card. Let me conclude with my email:

Well ur gonna have to define "crash".

do u lose control of ur mouse and keyboard, or does the screen just go black. Because chances are its just been set to shutdown if that happens. also, how long are u leaving it after u close the lid? because even with a closed lid it will still use power, and maybe the battery is just running out if u leave it for too long.

If your Shutting Down your computer: Wait till the computer has completely shut down and any indicating light is off, then close the lid of your computer.

If your putting computer on Sleep or Stand By mode: All you have to do is close the lid carefully.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

This problem is often caused by problems in the cable between the display and the rest of the computer. The problem is usually at the hinge. It is rarely possible to replace the cable at reasonable cost. Best to learn to live with it and do a proper shutdown before you close the lid.

if you mean crash as in shutting down, then it must be a setting.

when i close my laptop, it goes to the locked setting.

Hi, check the drivers for ur video card. It may also help telling us the operating system u r using as well. Check ur power management settings.

Good Luck!

It should not crash operating system on your laptop. It goes into auto-shutdown/sleep/hibernate options.

Please check your laptop system options
