Every time I run system restore, this is the error that comes up:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer' system files and settings were not changed.

Details:
System Restore failed to extract the file
(D:\Windows\$NtUninstallKB5740$\1704534893) from the restore point.
The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore.

You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. if you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information, see "What is Recovery?"

When I click that, a window comes up that says:

Additoinal recovery options, such as re-installing Windows, restoring your computer from a system image backup, or tools from your computer manufactuturer might be available. To find out which options are available, see the System Recovery Options menu.

I do not have a product key or Windows disk available, nor do I have the money to buy one. The system image backup does not work.
I have tried all of the restore points that were made available to me, and they do not work.
I'm stuck. ):
Any help would be amazing. I don't care about losing any of the files that I have saved or any programs that I have downloaded. I have already made copies on a seperate house computer so I do not need any of them. I just want to restore my computer completely, erasing all files, back to the facotry setting. Help!

Sound like ur backup file is damaged.

Does ur computer come with a recovery disk? If so, u can restore your system using that disk. If you don't, u need a windows xp or windows 7 disk to reformat your computer. Reformatting will lose all your data on your computer!!

There is an illegal way tho. But I can't tell u here. =(

System restore to a earlier date and or time is not the same as setting it back to factory.

Order the operating system recovery disc from Asus customer support and use to reinstall the original legal operating system using the product key code on the sticker on bottom of laptop to re-register the operating system.

Instructions for doing a Asus System Recovery, How to Recover Your Notebook PC, this puts it back to factory. http://support.asus.com/Search/KDetail.aspx?SLanguage=en&no=1775&t=1

If the built in system recovery does not work or is corrupt then the only option is to use the recovery disc set made for the laptop. After doing the system recovery create the operating system recovery disc set.

What are the system recovery options in Windows 7? http://support.asus.com/Search/KDetail.aspx?SLanguage=en&no=1499&t=0

Post the installed operating system as well as brand and model number when asking a question.

Does the laptop have Windows XP, Vista or 7 installed on it ?

Download the manual for U80A (don't pick bestbuy version it doesn't have the manual listed)

http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=U80A&p=3&s=189&os=30&hashedid=n/a

You can press F9 when booting to start Factory Restore. Choose restore to Entire hard drive.

http://www.ehow.com/how_6960619_restore-asus-laptop-factory-settings.html

The manual also tells how to make recovery cd's, in the Appendix section.
