I cannot put in any email addresses on my laptop, as the ampersand comes out as a quote i.e ' it seems to have changed format overnight, can anyone tell me what caused this and how I can get it back.

Open the control panel on your computer.
Usually Start - Control Panel
Select Regional and Language options.
Select the Languages tab
Select Details
Under keyboard you should see United States 101 keyboard.
Click the add button on the right hand side
Under Input language choose United Kingdom Ensure keyboard layout is United Kingdom
Click ok
Select "EN English (united states)"
Select Remove
You may get a prompt that this will be done at restart
Restart your computer and this should make your @ funciton as it should
Hope this helps

Your Keyboard has changed to American Format.
Try "Shift+2" to get the At Sign (@).
To Fix:
Start>Control Panel>Regional And Language Options>Keyboards And Languages Tab>Change Keyboards>Set Default to "English - United Kingdom"
BTW: An Ampersand is "and" symbol (&)

My guess would be that you've switched the keyboard language by accident. Try holding the left "Alt" key and pressing the left "Shift" key, then releasing. This is a shortcut for switching between languages. Now try getting your @ sign, and hopefully it will work. You can also check your keyboard language settings in Start --> control panel --> Regional and Language options (assuming you're on a PC).
If this doesn't work, at least temporarily you can copy the @ from an existing email and paste it into the ones you're trying to write.I hope this helps!

I think you'll find that ampersand is the sign for 'and' that looks like a figure 8 and is on the 7 key. The @ sign is not ampersand.

hmm, i think you have changed the keyboard layout somehow - if you are in the UK and have a UK keyboard, then you @ sign will now be where quote mark is. Try pressing shift+2 and see if that works. If you have an american layout keyboard then try pressing shift+" button. If this if the case, in vista, go to control panel > change keyboard and other input method > click change keyboards > there restore to your regional keyboard setting

I don't know what is the combination but this will help you I guess
try to copy this "@" sign in
then copy paste it to MS word then highlight the @ sign then press alt+x
there it will show the combination number of @ sign and everytime
you will use it hit alt plus the combination numbers
I do not know if it is applicable on dialog boxes or outside MS WORD

@ symbol is called an asperand. It used to be a symbol for something to do with wine in the 18th/19th centuries
