If I were you, I'd know exactly what I needed/wanted in a laptop before you go shopping! The salesperson will ask you what you need, and if you have no idea, they'll try to sell you the most expensive computer they can. Know what you'll be doing with the computer. What types of school courses will you be taking? Do you want this computer to last you for your high school years only, or do you expect to be able to use it in your college years? Buying brands or trying to decide between a Mac or PC should be decided before you head to the stores. You should have already been looking online to get an idea of what your needs will be. The newest Windows version, 10 will be out in September of this year, and you will be able to upgrade free from either Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 ( up to a year after 10 is released ). If you don't make the right choice and the computer you chose isn't what you need, you'll lose about 50% of the value if you sell it and buy a different computer. At your age, you should probably be looking for a computer to just get you through high school. That will give you plenty of time to choose the type of career you wish to follow in college. Depending on your career path, the choices of computers for college may vary greatly, from a Mac for videography to a high end PC for science or math. Maybe you should do some further studies before you make your decision. Good luck!

This... is something I wish I would've asked BEFORE I bought my first laptop. (Bought it about 2 years ago?) It looked great, and at the time, I knew NOTHING about computers. I seriously thought the amount of RAM that was installed determined how fast/powerful a computer was! Most employees will try to sell you ANYTHING. Firstly, it'd be great to know of your budget. You really can't go wrong with an Intel processor, but AMD makes some pretty decent ones. If you can help it, avoid AMD E-series processors, because they are fairly weak. (My laptop has an AMD E-1200 processor. VERY slow. Can't handle that much work.) Processors (also known as CPU) help to determine how many operations can be performed, efficiency, etc.In other words, a stronger processor allows you to handle more work at one time. The AMD A-series should suit your needs just fine. (A6,A8,A10, etc.) I'm suggesting AMD because of the cheapness. Intel processors can get very expensive, but Intel celeron is acceptable if you're on a tight budget and plan on using your laptop for everyday use (and not gaming).

The typical amount of RAM on a laptop is 4 GB, and depending on what you plan to do with the laptop, you might want to get a 500 GB (or more) hard drive. If touch screen is important to you, there are plenty of laptops that utilize touch screen features, but for those, I would REALLY have to suggest windows 8.1 instead of windows 8. If you can help it, buying a laptop online would be much cheaper than buying it in an actual store most of the time. Sorry for rambling, good luck on your laptop purchase!

Buy a Mac if all you care about is style, as there is little or no hardware difference between Mac and Windows laptops. But if you do care about what is good, or better.

SSD is faster than a traditional hard drive, 128gb is fine for a few apps and games.

LED is better than traditional LCD display screens.

RAM, more is better, 4 gigs minimum, 8 is pretty standard.

HDMI is handy, never know if you'll need to directly connect to a HDTV.

Tell them exactly what you need and don't need. If it's purely for school, you won't need much, any low end laptop will do what you need but if you want to use it for gaming etc you'll want an Intel, with at least 8gb RAM and at least 500gb hard drive, SSD is best. Brands I'd recommend personally are Asus, HP, Toshiba. Avoid Acer and maybe Dell though I've heard they lifted their game.

An apple is more expensive but is better quality and windows are also good laptops cheaper work just as well but look less attractive. (You can get different colour windows laptops.) I would recommend a windows laptop and to get a good one you will need to spend 300-450 Pounds

Specify your need as detailed as you can, who's to say your everyday need is Civil Engineering? Or your schooling is specific advanced physics? Without details most $$$ laptop will be pushed onto you.

Acers are very reliable and just all around good computers. Been using them since 1997, worked on computers since I was a kid. I would order one offline, being that they are hard to come by, everywhere except walmart.

if you have no idea what you are looking for, spend 20 minutes on e-bay and look at secons hand prices...dont bother with mac, its a hassle if youve no idea....get second hand, no more than £80, 4gb ram, 250gb hdd, win7 at least(8pref), then use it, see what you use it for mostly then spend big bucks on something decent.......
