I'm having trouble choosing so i need some extra opinions, dont say anything of the price I am aware of that.

Gateway FX: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5270805&CatId=4938

The ASUS has a i7 processor (much faster than the Gateway), a slightly better graphics card, it's also lighter and smaller, but it's screen despite being 15 inches, has a much higher resolution (1080p high definition).

The ASUS also comes with several free goodies, like a bag and a high end gaming mouse, (Razer Salmosa)

The mouse itself is probably worth around $60, bag is worth $40 at most, so you get around $100 worth of extra stuff.

Compare this to the Gateway which has a older generation Core 2 Duo (which by no means is no slouch, it's still quite fast), a slightly inferior GPU, quite heavy with 17 inches screen size but only a mediocre screen resolution of 1440*900.

However the price tag is much lower, so there is a $500 difference between the 2.

Going with the Core i7 means it'll keep you happier for longer since the i7 has better longevity and performance than the Core 2. The ASUS is also lighter and smaller, so it's also more portable.

The Gateway at 17 inches would probably be better off as a desktop replacement. It's not something you would carry everyday to university or school.

Going with the Core 2 means you'll save $400, (don't forget the bag and mouse is not included with the gateway)

actually the price pretty much tell the difference between them. the Asus totally beats the gateway in terms of performance: speed, ram, video card.

most people think of gaming laptop and go with popular brand like dell, hp, or toshiba. omg,.. totally wrong... (iam not saying about alienware by dell, they are truly gaming but we are paying too much for cosmetic than performance)

it is a smart choice when looking at Gateway FX since it is powerful and affordable. Before buying my gateway fx in 2008, I have done intensive research and found out that there is no better deal for such a monster laptop.

It is still true now.

However, for a long time run, perhaps should go with Asus.

Asus is much more wellknown and reliable brand than gateway (iam not saying gateway is bad, but iam saying asus is just so good)

There are recently many amazing gamings laptop by Asus now, even one with 3d (the 1st 3d gaming laptop ever built in this world is by ASUS :) )

trust me, it is much much better than the freaking tigerdirect. stuff selling at tigerdirect are always overprice, and when they are on sale, they are equal other stores.... what is even better, most stuff at bhphoto has NO TAX!!!

dont forget to check out www.jr.com also, it is as good as bhphoto

Another point should keep in mind, are you going to travel a lot with your new laptop? I have gateway, a previous model of the gateway you are showing us; not to mention the bag and my books, I have to carry about 10pounds around campus, which is really painful T_T

Also, screen size is a matter also. IF you do not plan to travel much often, buy 17inch, you would not go wrong with it. personally, 17 inch is just enough for gaming, not to mention 15.

in short, go with asus gaming laptop, for long time run, i recommend i5 or i7, ram at least 6gb (not 4 if you want to survive the next few years), HDD 7200rpm and at least 320gb (not 5400rpm) ; and most important, pick the best vga card in your budget; the reason why is CPU is upgradable, same as RAM, HDD, but definitely not video card. I would recommend at least gtx 260 1gb. I am a fan of Nvidia so dont ask about Ati.
