I just got a new laptop last month. Its an Acer, with Windows Vista Home Basic. It seems the battery life is very poor. Does anyone know the adverage battery life for this laptop?

30-45 minutes is very bad but there are a lot of factors to consider here. People often buy Acers because Acer offers the broadest price range in the computing industry, from the 500 dollar walmart special to the 2000 dollar Acer Ferrari edition. When buying a laptop you need to pay close attention to the batteries ratings and the laptops requirements. Some cheaper notebooks include small batteries and use less efficient hardware which is a bad combo for a laptop's battery life now that you have already purchased the machine you can improve your battery life by doing a few things.
-Turn your screen brightness down to the lowest comfortable level. (This can sometimes make a HUGE difference)
-Turn Off unnecessary devices in your laptops power management software, this can include your wifi if your not using wireless internet, your ethernet interface if you ARE using wireless, set up a hard drive shutdown during idle (this can be done in windows power management.
-Turn down your chip speed if your not doing anything process intensive (this doesn't often make very large changes but it is a change non the less.
If you do all of this and you still have problems then it would be a good idea to redeem that warranty or buy a larger battery.

That is about right. Battery life is very short on laptops, which is why I always use the AC adapter/ charger.

First tweak the power settings to allow for maximum battery life. I don't own your laptop, but the batter life that you specified probably isn't normal. You may have something wrong with the battery...

SilenceT has posted a good answer.
45 minutes is very bad, but if the laptop was an inexpensive model, then you might not get much more than that.
Personally, I would try and get a warranty replacement since it is so new. You could mess around with all the tricks to try and extend battery life if you want to... but you can do that with your new battery too, right?
when you do need to buy one in the future, try to find a double capacity battery. They will run you about $100, but they will run twice as long. Also, look for the upstart battery brand; they have lifetime warranties.
Good luck!

Depending on the display size of your notebook and how bright you have the video setting, this causes battery power to decline.
Check your settings for battery power performance levels (Balanced/Power Saver/High Performance)....
You've also got to discharge the fully-charged battery at least once a week, continually keeping the laptop plugged-in will also cause a decline in performance.... By the term "Discharge" you must use it without being plugged-in to your AC/DC Power Converter - Run the notebook on battery only and let it run until the battery icon/indicator reaches 10 to 15 percent , shutdown the laptop correctly and then plug the AC/DC Power Converter into your notebook and to the AC Power Outlet and let the notebook battery "Recharge to 100 percent"...!!!
This will allow the notebook battery to "Recalibrate" improving on performance and usage life. If this is not done it will "Permanently Damage Your Laptop Battery"...!!! And you'll then need to replace the battery and they are not cheap ($129.99 or More)...

seems like your battery is having a problem. Before you take it to service center, do 1 Battery Exercise.
That is,
Charge the battery to the max. Then let the battery drain to the max. Again Charge it and let the battery drain to max. Avoid Sleep mode. Disable sleep, autoswitchoff monitor, and HDD. and let the battery drain till your PC dies. And again do it if you see some improvements happening.
Ofcourse there are chances your battery is having fault or its life is over. An average life of an Li-on battery is 2-3 years of 300-500 charges. Hope it helps.w

Same with my old Acer laptop. The battery life was only 30 minutes or so. Overtime, its lifespan will steadily decrease down to about 10 minutes.
You should buy a better battery if you want it to last longer.

Thats pretty low, you might want to put a warrenty claim in on that. If your running your computer at full power on battery it should last at least an hour. The average these days seems to be about 2 hours for normal use. I've seen higher though.

Well, there is a way to reset your battery life, and this is how I have done it before. When your computer is used incorrectly, it begins to think that the maximum of it's battery capacity is at a certain point, say.. half.. It will stop trying to charge it at that point to stop it from overcharging and ruining it.. Smart computer.. If you completely use up ALL of the battery, meaning switching off your power saving options, and using it until it won't turn on again. (Once it shuts off, it generally still has a little bit more left, so switch it back on and keep it going. When it doesn't switch on then follow the continuing:) Now plug it in, and let it charge without you doing anything with it, and it should have recognized it's maximum battery life again. There are tools you can find online that will measure your battery life for you as well.
