I have an Asus G73JH laptop. I'm thinking maybe it's the HDD or the OS. I know if it's the HDD I'll have to get a knew one. But if it's the OS, how would I re-install a corrupt OS? Thanks.

Make sure there are no DVDs/CDs in the drive and remove any flash drives.

On start up (before Windows loads) keep taping F9 when the Asus logo appears, to access the recovery partition.

1. Press [Enter] to select Windows Setup [EMS Enabled].

3. Select the language you want to recover and click Next.

4. Read the ASUS Preload Wizard messages and click Next.

5. Select a partition option and click Next. Partition options:

Recover Windows to first partition only.

This option deletes only the first partition and allows you to keep other partitions, and to create a new system partition as drive "C".

Recover Windows to entire HD.

This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk drive and creates a new system partition as drive "C".

Recover Windows to entire HD with two partitions.

This option deletes all partitions from your hard drive and creates two new partitions "C" (25%) and "D" (75%).

6. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the recovery process.

This can a corrupted boot sector but unfortunately also a bad HDD.

So first try running your recovery software from your hard Disk. Consult your user manual.

On some Asus this activated by pressing F9 key during switch on or at least during the Asus logo display This is also know as Factory reset and you will loose all your data you have put on.

If you can get to it read the following Asus web page and also note about creating backup recovery software DVD's

If it does happen to be your HDD then you have no option but to get another disk and apply to Asus for those recovery DVD's

You can go to the bios and browse until you find the option to select boot device order. Then set the DVD/CD drive to be first in the order. Insert your OS intaller CD/DVD and save and exit from bios.

This will enable you to boot from cd/dvd and install your OS (you should ideally format the primary partition during installation). If your HDD is faulty however it will be indicated during installation or you may not be able to complete boot process from CD.

With me I get that in my Asus U47a if I ever have it set in the BIOS to look for a bootable CD before looking for a bootable hard drive. Even with no disk in the optical drive it'll come up with that message. It boots to CDs fine. So I have to set the hard drive as the primary boot option otherwise I'll get that message

you have been given the mind-blowing answer above. the pc won't boot with the working equipment from yet another pc on it. Set your bios the place the cd tension is the 1st boot gadget.placed your xp disc interior the hot laptop, then reboot, while brought about hit any key and boot from the cd. Do a clean deploy of xp. while brought about delete the previous partitions and living house windows will create new ones for you and could format them.
