I was using several programs on my laptop, 2 browsers for strategy games, watching internet TV, listening to streaming music, and watching videos on CNN and realized that my computer could speed up a bit. I just bought 4GB RAM to upgrade my memory and I was wondering what I could expect from the performance. I Googled around and heard about things like BIOS and CPU performance (seen on a window) and didn't know anything about that stuff. When I'm using my computer at its capacity, a meter on my Vista sidebar says CPU Usage 100%, RAM 70%, Core1 100%, Core2 100%. Should my CPU Usage percentage decrease after installing the upgraded RAM?

You are running too many programs at the same time.

As for RAM, unless you have a 64 bit operating system, you'll not be able to use more than 3 GB of RAM. And it also depends on motherboard you have there.

Check specifications of your computer. It will tell you the MAXIMUM amount of RAM it will take (I have a feeling you wasted your money on the RAM you bought. Probably your laptop cannot use more than 3 GB of RAM anyway.)

If you are running 32-bit Windows Vista, you can't go higher than 3 GB of RAM. If you are running 64-bit Vista, you can have a lot more RAM.

To check what version of Vista you have, right click on "Computer", and click on "Properties". Scroll down and you will see either 32 or 64-bit.

Another problem is, that the RAM might not physically fit in your laptop.

Your cpu usage should NOT be at 100% unless it's working hard. If it's idle and no programs are running with it at 100% you may have a virus.

Usually 3Gb is plenty for most people so I don't think that's your problem.

Update your ANTIVIRUS and do a full scan or try this. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
