I have a 3-yr. old Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with Windows XP operating system. Many people tell me I have to do this since I can't afford a technician to fix my registry that's infected with Trojan.Zlob, & I keep getting ERROR CODE 19, & my DVD+RW drive is corrupted & missing. But the thing is-I'm afraid to lose certain programs, like Microsoft Office that I paid for seperately. I can't find the CD's, & my computer is out of warranty.

I'd HATE to have to go this route. I wish I can get the registry fixed & my DVD+RW drive back without having to go through all this mess. This happened AS SOON AS my Norton Antivirus expired. & I didn't know they had free virus protection software. I have Avast, Spyware Doctor, & MalWare Bytes that I got AFTER this computer mess, & none of them are effective in getting rid of this. I can't reboot my PC into safe mode or anything, & it won't let me restore. All I wish for is to get rid of these infections & get my DVD+RW drive back.

Let me see if I can help.

You might be able to fix the code 19 registry error and get back the DVDRW without reinstalling Windows, by following the instructions given in this Microsoft KBS article : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q314060 . It specifically lists “Your registry might be corrupted. (Code 19)” as a symptom, chances are this will fix it.

Even though you can’t access the DVD Drive INSIDE WINDOWS, you should still be able to use it OUTSIDE WINDOWS: i.e to boot from CD and install XP. Because most probably, the error is due to a Windows registry corruption and not due to an actual hardware failure. just put in the CD, set the boot order in the BIOS to boot from CD, it will work.

As for the missing Office installation, you can use a tool like Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder (http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ ), to find the keys of already installed Microsoft products INCLUDING OFFICE and Windows XP. Write it down and use it the next time you install Office. You should be able to borrow the Office CDs from someone else and use your key to install. finding the CDs if you have a legit key shouldn't be that much of a problem.

What you have to do is back up your stuff, like microsoft word in a cd, or drive of some kind. After you have done that, then restart your computer, when there is an option of going into the boot screen push the option(for me its F12) after you have done this you will look for the option -boot from a usb or onboard cd drive-. Before pressing enter, insert your windows xp, or vista (or any other operating system) and then press enter. After this has been done, there will be a detailed step system, guiding you through. This will DELETE EVERYTHING IN YOUR HARDDRIVE, including the virus. Edit you settings, and your done. Hope this answers your question =D

This is how to preform a "Clean" install of Windows XP, mind you this will delete everything on your computer and install only that which comes on your windows XP installation CD.

The First 3 Steps may be irrelevant.

1) Put in your Windows XP CD, When the computer is starting you may have to press delete until it takes you to the setup screen.

2) When at the setup screen, search for the Boot Order* and have your computer boot from your CD Drive first.

3) Save All settings, then restart your computer.

4) Your computer will start and should say press any key to boot from CD. Press any Key.

5) You will then follow through the instructions, Once you get to a screen that shows your Hard Drive partitions, You wish to Delete all partitions and create a new one on which to install windows XP.

6) Follow through the rest of the guide, to install windows.

I hope I didn't miss anything, and best of luck in the future!

in case you have already lost the cd's, you will could desire to touch the manufactorer for replacements around $10. After receiving them, turn on the computer and it will supply you a message which includes "Press ** to pass to BIOS" hence ** could nicely be any key. After, discover your way as nicely settings, and choose Boot to CD as first no longer easychronic 2d. go out BIOS, and it will supply a message "Press any key as nicely from CD". Press something or you will pass to the previous XP. After that follow the instructions on reveal. once you end you may desire to alter the BIOS settings as nicely to no longer easychronic first, and CD 2d.
