My toshiba satellite c660-10T running windows 7 did a windows update, on shutdown,on saturday. Did not use it all day sunday and have gone to turn it on now, monday and all I get is a black screen with flashing cursor. I have tried rebooting in safemode, in previous working mode and even tried to run the recovery media discs and nothing will work. I have tried absolutely everything. Can somebody please help with a suggestion. I know that I am probably going to lose all my files(most of which are backed up) but I cannot afford a new laptop. I have used every F key and the zero key which does bring up a dialog box with options
HDD/SSD TOSHIBA MK3265GSXN-(S2)
CD/DVD TSST corp TS-L633C-(S5)

Enter BIOS setup

if i click the top line all that happens is it goes to
Launch repair
start windows normally

None of which do anything other than go back to black screen and if I click the second line it runs windows is loading files and a white line runs along the bottom of the screen, and then back to black screen.

I am about to rip my hair out here

Thank you

Modern toshibas have a hidden recovery partition for this purpose which is normally accessed one of 2 ways - try the first method for preference

1. Copy all your files and documents to an external storage device.

2. Shut down the computer.

3. Turn the PC back on and hit the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Option Screen appears.

4. Click "Repair Your Computer" if you are not already on it and then press ENTER

5. choose your country and click OK

6. On the "System Recovery Options Screen" click "Restore Application" which is the last option.

7. Follow the on-screen instructions

8. When prompted, click on "Full Factory Recovery"

9. "Next"

10. Click "Yes"

11. you will notice for a while it seems like nothing is happening, give it some time.

12. After some minutes, recovery will complete and you click "Finish"

or

1) Hold down the power button for 10 (ten) seconds to switch off your machine.

Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.

2) Press and hold the 0 (zero) key and at the same time, tap the power button once to switch on your notebook.

3) When the machine Starts beeping; release the 0 key.

4) When prompted by the warning screen; select Yes to continue with the system recovery.

5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software; click Next.

6) Select Recover to out-of-box state. Click Next again.

7) Click Next to Start recovery.

You could also try running a repair disk and see if that will fix it, you can make a repair disk from any working windows 7 PC, as long as it is the same bit version 32 or 64bit - just type in backup in the search box and follow the prompts

Many Toshiba laptops come with the factory software recovery image stored in a special (hidden) area on the hard disk. From this special hidden system recovery image, you can restore your computer to its factory-fresh software condition by following these steps:

1)Make sure the computer is turned off.

2)Remove any peripherals such an external mouse, keyboard, monitor, USB flash drive etc.

3)Make sure the AC Adapter is plugged in and working.

4)Press and hold down the 0 (zero) key on the keyboard while powering on the computer. Release it when the recovery warning screen appears.

5)If the recovery process offers a choice of Operating Systems, select the appropriate one for you.

6)A warning screen appears, stating that when the recovery is executed all data will be deleted and rewritten.

7)Click Yes to continue.

8)When the Toshiba Recovery Wizard opens select "Recovery of Factory Software" or the appropriate option for your needs.

9)Continue to follow the directions restarting as necessary.

Call Toshiba on the Telephone. You can get their phone number from the website. They can do it for you remotely but they will charge you for doing it. It might be worth it for them to do it and to do it right for you.
