If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.

2. Click Run

3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

6. Click "OK"

This machine is beyond repair. You'd spend months looking for replacement parts to this thing, and probably still never find anything. I've never even heard of a 697 mhz processor, and with 128 megs of ram (less assuming you have a shared video card eating up memory) you're probably having a really slow experience.

The best thing to do is to get a netbook, it's a laptop designed for internet use. They can't run high-end programs, but they're ultraportable and cheap (about $300-500 I think) and most definitely faster than what you have right now.I think netbooks have like 512 megs to 1 gig of ram. That's a huge improvement. The only downside is low storage (4 gigs of hard-drive space to maybe like 16) but since you would use it primarily for internet, not a problem.

Sorry, but your machine was built in 2000 or so, and is plain obsolete. Only thing that's worth doing is putting in another 128MB or 256MB of RAM to hit 256-384MB. That should really speed things up a lot, as 128MB is just not enough to comfortably use XP. Nothing else makes sense, I'm afraid, and my suggestion is no panacea for plain dead obsolete hardware.

I can't advise you on what kind of RAM to get, as I know nothing of the "Lavie L." Consult your manual for information on what you need.

first thing is to get more RAM, if you are capable of installing it it only requires you to unscrew a bit of the cover and pop it in, for the moment id suggest trying msconfig

a guide of how to use it is below, uncheck all but your antivirus and your antispyware , the programs will not be effected but will not load in background when started up, this will help your low spec machine greatly

to get the correct type of RAM and to see if you can fit mor eonto the MOBO got to cruical and install the system scanner and it will send let you now and send it in post. very cheap also with fast delivery. good ram aswell
