Bought a used laptop from some guy on craigslist, and he says he doesn't remember the user name or password. I can't get past the home screen that prompts for a name and password, is there any way I could reset this so I make up my own username and password to gain access?

There a way to change to user name and password it only work on win 7 if have you it we going are change ease access center to a command prompt witch is bottom left hand corner of your screen blue circle with white line on it

Step 1 get download Ubuntu Desktop (Linux) for free.

step 2 Burn Ubuntu on computer

Step 3 make sure bios is set boot from cd once done that it start reading the disk (side note) if it does not work look for boot option or bios setup before windows starts select proper key either delete key or f1 just follow prompt on the screen

step 4 select try Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

step 5 select Place on top right corner and select c: don't select reserve select next one

step 6 Go windows folder then system 32 folder find Utilman.exe once found right click rename to Utilman1.exe next find cmd file. copy cmd file it should look like this cmd copy and replace cmd copy with Utilman.exe once done restart computer.

step 7 click on blue it will open command prompt Ignore the last type on the video just go step 8 thanks

step 8 type in the command prompt control userpasswords2 and press enter

You can use a program like DBAN to clear it, but this would require re-installing the OS. There are also some clearing programs built into the BIOS, which would also remove the OS.

There is no non-hacking way that you can take off everything like that, but leave the OS. You would have to either buy a new OS or use the product key.
