Question:
Problems with HP Pavilion dv7 Laptop Power Cable AC Adapter Housing:?

As the question says, I've got that type of laptop and a two part power cord to charge it.

Yesterday the housing on the adapter came loose and there was a brown.... substance (melted adhesive glue?) around the seams of the AC adapter housing device. Now the housing comes is not firmly put together; it partially separates. It would completely separate if I didn't keep it together carefully.

I bought this computer less than 4 months ago, so it should be under warranty.

Questions: (the order is important)

a.) Is this dangerous? (electrical or fire hazard)

b.) Can I get this key part repaired or replaced? (can't charge my laptop without a power cord).

c.) What caused this to happen?

Between work and school, it is not uncommon for me to have a 16+ hour day. I have occasionally stayed up for days on end like this. My laptop is on, plugged in, and running on high performance the entire time (needed for research purposes). I think the AC adapter may have overheated, melting the adhesive and allowing the housing to separate. Is this an accurate assessment and if so, how do I keep this from happening again?

Thank you for your time.

The one thing you don't mention is if the output is AC or DC. If the connectors are the same size, as far as the specs go, it looks like it will work. How do you tell if it's AC or DC? Many power adapters simply say it (AC/DC) with the output data. If yours does, you simply didn't put it in your post. If it doesn't say, you have to look for a symbol. The symbol for DC is three dots with a solid line segment over the 3 dots. For AC you get a tilde (wave symbol) over the 3 dots. The laptop supply is definitely is DC. As long as the other is DC also, then go ahead. If you don't see any symbol, you need to get hold of a digital meter which will tell you for sure. Good Luck.
