I would advise waiting until your computer has booted to hook the monitor up to it. Then from there it depends on which Operating System you're using.
In Windows Vista open Personalization in the Control Panel and then click Display Settings. In Windows XP open the Display icon in the Control Panel and then click the Settings tab.
Here you will be able to configure projector settings, and use it either as a second display or to display what’s currently being shown on your computer. This second option is usually the default setting.
If you are using a laptop and it is connected to a dock, this may cause problems with the projector being recognized correctly. In this case, disconnect your laptop from the dock before connecting a projector.

It sounds like your laptop is missing its display drivers. To figure out the type of display drivers your laptop requires simply click the start menu at the bottom right and then right-click on “computer” or “my computer”, if you’re still using xp, if you’re using vista, then upgrade lol. Once the menu comes up click on manage. Once the computer management menu has appeared, click on device manager and then click on display adapters. The name of your adapter should be there. Simply Google that [the name of your graphics card] make sure you get the one that is designed for your operating system whether it’s a 32-bit operating system or 64-bit operating system. Once you have your display drivers installed you should be all set. However if you are still getting the same error or the same problem attempt to boot up the computer without pressing the f8 key. And attempt to use the monitor once the operating system is loaded. If you’re using Windows 7 you can simply right-click on the yellow triangle at the bottom right and select troubleshooting and Windows 7 will to fix this problem for you. Or show you the way to fix it.
If none of this works for you google the issue you’re having, (include in the google search you’re computer model and the error: i.e. HP Pavilion model *, monitor issues, display issues).
Comb thought the results if you don’t find a fix that way revise you’re search keywords and attempt a new search. Odd’s are that you’re not the first person out of the billions on the web to have this issue and post about it.
