Ok. so my Sony Vaio laptop 2006 model, it normally works even though we use a shorted battery of some sort. All of a sudden tho, it stopped booting all the way and randomly cuts off. Sometimes we had to hold the power cord in a certain way to get it to turn on, it would work fine once doing that. Now it won't go past the boot screen, like once you first turn it on, it gets froze at start screen. Then sometimes it makes it to the user menu screen and such...then turns off. Could someone help me, possibly explain what this means and tell me how to fix it, if possible. Thanks in advance.

Does the PC turn off completely, or does the software stop working? I suppose you're using windows. What I'd do first would be to download and burn a bootable Ubuntu CD and put it into the vaio laptop, and see if the linux works properly. If it does, you're lucky, it's just windows acting up, and you can try to do a system restore from the original windows CD or a repair install. If Ubuntu doesn't boot either you might have a hardware problem...

However, based on the power cord thing, I'd also try borrowing one of those from someone else and try it, to see if that works. Not sure if it can be any one or if it has to be your specific model, since I don't have a laptop...

Switch on the laptop without plugging in the power cord, after you see the user log-in screen plug in the power cord.

if you logged in change your battery power option to power saver from high-perfomance by clicking the battery icon in the task-bar (near the notification area where the date and time is)

make sure you switch off the laptop after every time you use. This problem occurs because of your power cord is damaged, power cord is new (not original) or battery life is over
