ok, ive experienced quite a lot of problems with my laptop lately.. it freezes up and turns off out of no where.. so i thought I had a virus so i backed all my files up on my hard drive then reformatted my laptop deleting all the files etc.. but the problem continued even after everything was deleted. i noticed my fan has stopped working also, so I bought a cooling pad for it, to keep it cool. I have reinstalled my virus protection software but it still freezes on me. HOWEVER I have used the guest account for the first time not my main account, and it doesnt freeze on the guest account.. only the main account.. whats going on?

The reason why your computing is switching off abruptly is it's overeating. It does this as a fail-safe to prevent any damage being done. Buying a cooling pad will not be the solution for this, you will need to replace the fan or run the risk of irreversibly damaging your computer.

Darren's right for some part. It's overheating, that's it. No further questions. Guest account has more limitations I guess so it wont have to run more. And the account's probably empty.

A) Download CPU-Z Hardware Monitor [basic] to check your temperature levels, if it says it's critical or doesn't display Fan RPM, your fan either has a problem OR is not compatible with "READ Mode".

Not all fans can display RPM via an operating system, same with motherboard precise details.

Good luck!

Computer software constantly reads and writes from memory (ram), in your guest account its very likely you have less applications running including background tasks.

Run a free memory test (available online) to verify its not the ram itself that is faulty

Or

Compare the applications running in task manager with the guest account and your account. Uninstall the different applications one by one until the problem goes away.

Or

Check the windows event viewer for clues.

If you can give me the model, I can find instruction on how to remove panel for fan then you need to use canned air to remove the dust. My old emachines went like this and it was absolutely caked in dust and would get CPU temps of 80'C + and just turn off in a blink. Since cleaning it inside it has not done this so far.

install coretemp from http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ . Your idle temperatures should not be greater than 60 degree Celsius. If it is, your laptop is shutting down to prevent overheat damage. Also check if there is any driver incompatibility in Device manager. Some softwares like connectify can also cause blue screen of death. These softwares are automatically deactivated in Guest mode.
