laptop help please, turns on then blue screen with words for a few seconds?

what happened was when i came back from school my dad was updating the laptop, i looked at the laptop then it said needs to restart, like it always does when we've updated it.
so i restarted when upstairs and came back to find there wierd words on the laptop with a blackbackground.
my dad was confused and was wondering what the hell was going on, so he turned it off and turned it back on.
when it turned back on, it does the normal thing when you dont turn the laptop off properly
"safe mode
normal mode"
something familiar like that.
we tried all four of them.
so we choose normal mode and itdoes the normal upload it does which leads to 4 accounts (our family) but it didnt lead to the 4 accounts which we can choose from
it brought us to a blue screen with words on it which only shows for 3 seconds.
i manage to take a picture of it before it dissapeared, it says this:
"a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent d(couldnt take a full picture of this word)
if this is the first time you seen this stop error screen.
restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps:
check to make sure any new hardware or software is propperly installed. if this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacture( missed a bit again, soz)
for any windows updates you might need.
if problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software (cant tell this word but i think its:) BIOS(?) memory options such as caching or shadowing. if you need to use safemode to remove or disable components, restart your computer. press F8 to select advanced setup options and then select safe mode.
technical information:
***stop: (then numbers and words :L )"

any help on what to do or what happened would be great.
thanks :)

take it to a technician because your windows is corrupted

when your dad turned off the computer by pressing the button

he damaged the startup section of the windows which you guys

will have to get it repaired, i dont think it should be much to get it

fixed but it should take around 2-3 hours

but thats on the good side

on the bad side its that he could have damaged the physical Hard Drive

and if he did that well you lost all of your files and you will have to replace the hard drive

and thats kinda high, the prices vary and well prices to get it installed vary from ppl

oh and never go to bestbuy to get it fixed nor a big electronic store either because

they gonna charge you just to look at it, plus what they going to do to it

if you take it there they gonna charge you around 250 - 350 just to get it fixed

so i would recommend to take it to the small computer shop in town

itll be faster and a lot cheaper

Try booting into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key after the BIOS information displays but before Windows starts to load. This will give you the boot options menu and you can choose Safe Mode. Should this allow you to log on to an administrator's account then you can do the following assuming this is Windows XP:

1. Right click on My Computer and go to Properties.

2. Go to the Advanced tab and open the Startup and Recovery.

3. Uncheck the box Automatically Restart under the System Failure section.

4. Reboot the computer.

When the computer Blue screens it will stay on and give you the time to write down the error message it displays. This error message will give us an indication as to what is going on.

Optionally you can boot to Safe Mode and restore Windows to a time before the updates where installed.

Since you cannot get into the computer in Safe Mode then boot on the Windows Vista disk that came with the computer. Do a Repair install of Windows. This will leave all of your data and applications intact. The best way, to be safe, is to remove the hard drive and slave it on another computer if it is a SATA drive. Should this be an IDE drive then you will need to put the drive into an external hard drive case and connect it to another computer using a USB port. This will at least let you backup your data first.

You have what in the trade is called a BSOD "blue screen of death".Because your Dad switched the machine off halfway through the updating process some of the startup files have been damaged. It appears that the only fix is a reinstall.

Your laptop has a recovery partition that will only allow a reinstall. This can only be accessed by a keypress combo during bootup So you could recover your machine but you may well lose all your personal files data etc. The other option is to take it to take out the hard drive, mount it into an external caddy, connect it to a good PC and see if you can recover your personal data (or take it to a repair centre and see if they can recover your data for you)

As you have explained,it seems to be a software issue. You must provide those numbers and words under the technical details. At least words!.So can't give a direct answer bcoz of your fault. However try a system restore from safe mood.It should work

It is clear that you need to select safe mode.

then repair blue screen software related with Regtool.
