hi stephen

when buying laptops for less than £300 you may find they will be either windows xp or windows 2000,and sometimes windows 98se

a good company is morgan computers at http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/default.asp,and they have a excellent deal at the moment on a ECS 321 notebook (http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=4535&CategoryID=11&SubCategoryID=#reviews)

this laptop is just £234.99 inc VAT and for that you get a Intel Celeron M 350 (1.3GHz) processor and 256MB DDR RAM ,the memory may be slightly on the low side but so-dimm memory is quite cheap to buy

other specifications include a 40GB hard disk and combo CD-RW/DVD ROM ,4 x USB 2.0 ports, parallel, serial, VGA and PS/2 ports

this wont beat any speed records but for your needs it should be fine

another laptop worth considering is the Acer 7004 17" Screen notebook(http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=4594&CategoryID=11&SubCategoryID=285),with a AMD Sempron 3500+ processor (1.8GHz) and 1gb of ram this is quite good for its low price tag

other features include a 80GB hard disk and multiformat DVD writer ,plus the nVidia 6100 128MB shared graphics are pixel and shader model 3.0 ensuring excellent graphics and gameplay possibilities

the Toshiba A200 Vista(http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/shop/detail.asp?ProductID=4404&CategoryID=11&SubCategoryID=250)is another decent sub £300 laptop and has some excellent specs inlcuding :

Toshiba Satellite Pro A200-1JW, Toshiba part number: PSAE1E-00N002EN

Intel Celeron M 520 (1.6Ghz) processor, 1GB DDR 2 Ram

120GB hard disk drive, 15.4" TruBrite Widescreen TFT (1280 x 800 res)

Multi format DVD Writer drive, Intel GMA 950 256MB Graphics (Shared)

6 in 1 card reader, WiFi networking, Windows Business edition installed

hope this helps mate ,however any problems let me know

good luck stephen !

I had recently (2 months ago) purchased an Acer Extensa 4420. It has 2 gb Ram, 160 gb HD, 256 video ram, sd/xd/ms/ reader, dvd drive/writer, wireless, 4 USB ports, and a fire wire port. Its an AMD athlon dual core and i forget whether its 1.6 or 1.8 ghz.

I downgraded my OS to windows XP and its been working great for me. It boots up in under 15 seconds and runs most things real quick. I use it mostly just for college stuff (papers, presentations, etc), watching movies, and playing a few games.

I got this for 500 US dollars at bestbuy.

for that price, you could buy all the things you would need to build your own computer... i spent £400 building my own, and its just about good enough to play realistic games, but im still upgrading it...

give it a think, then go to pcworld or try ebay etc... its a much better option =D
